1997 FOB Programming

The two buttons on the alarm fob, one turns the car alarm and immobiliser on, the other turns them off.
After the facelift of the car the alarm button was put into the key, rather than having a separate unit as on the pre facelift cars.
 
Secondhand alarm fobs come up at eBay, occasionally but some are really expensive while others are reasonable.

I think my car is "after the facelift". My key has three buttons: lock / unlock / switch on interior lights. No switches for alarm and immobiliser, but presumably these functions are part of "lock"?
 
The original alarm could have been removed for whatever reason, and a different one installed hence the different fob?
 
Well the $150 new used fob came today. I used the open the trunk, sit in the seat and so on method and it immediately programmed and works just as it should. I think it's safe to say the one for Subaru/BMW look the same as the one for BMW but it simply does not work.
 
Does anyone happen to know if the parking lights should flash when using the fob to lock/unlock the car with the fob? They do not but the alarm siren chirps once when locking and twice when unlocking. I did hold the button down to test the panic feature and it definitely works. Had to put the key in the ignition and put it in the run position for the panic alarm to shut off.
 
If anything were to flash it would be the Hazard Lights (emergency blinkers) unless the US version is wired differently to the European models. Could be.

On the 3G ews I have you could have some features programmed such as having the audio churp and visual disabled but can only be done at the dealers unless it can be done through inpa. There is serpiestar program boxes out there rare and usually pricey on eBay sometimes.
