1997 FOB Programming

I recently bought a 1997 Z3 1.9L. It came with two keys which both work fine. It did not come with the fob. I bought an aftermarket fob and it will not program using any of the methods I've found online. Called the aftermarket fob seller and they said it must be programmed by a dealer or locksmith. The dealer says they can't help and locksmiths don't seem to know what I'm talking about.

Can anyone tell me how to program this?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

Thanks, I'll give this a try I suppose.

I can put the car in programming mode using the open the trunk, get in the car and close the door, turn the car on and off five times, open and close the drivers door then see the alarm LED come on and alarm chirp method. When I press the button on the remote the LED does not flash. With this in mind could the switch behind the glove box in learning mode still do the trick?

I pulled the glove box and found the security module and it does not have the rubber plug or hole. I removed the screws holding it together and it has a small pair of switches in it that are both set to on.

I’ve noted you used the description Hood so I take it state side? Looks like you have a different system fitted from the uk.
This thread might help match what you have

It might be helpful if you post up some pics of your fob including thecircuit board and the alarm module you just pulled to provide some more information.
Yes, I'm in the United States. As mentioned no hole or switch on the alarm module. here are pictures of everything. I'm guessing that I have the 3G Mk2 system but am not sure. I took the module apart and there is no orange wire that could be shorted to ground to put it into learning mode.

Have you tried googling the part number on the box as I can’t make it all out on the photo.

I’ve not come across this version from anyone in the uk. Have you posted up bimmer forums US or worth a try on one of the face book groups.

Your remote looks totally different from any of early bmw offerings I’ve seen so possibly you may have been sold a pup.

I would start by trying to identify what version your black box is then to find which fob is required. Reading through that link I sent you on versions which have no programmable switch it can be done by grounding the orange wire but I think you need to identify the version of the box first then move on from there.

Just googled the Canada number and got this result

So maybe the made in Japan makes sense if it was the same stuff installed in Subaru’s

Looks like they were used https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?354956-BMW-OEM-Alarm-Remote&p=4187352#post4187352 a bit more detective work needed.

Looks like you have all the parts

Just need to identify the black box and hopefully find a lead on programming it😁

I’ve just reread through that’s parts listing and in the ad descriptionthe seller states that installation and programming instructions can be sent as a PDF. If you contact the seller hopefully they will provide them.

Hopefully that will sort you out.

When I Google the part number I see BMW Alarm Module - OBDII alarm module to protect your car. The part number is: 82 11 1 469 925

This is an after market remote that I bought. The manufacturer claims works on Subaru and BMW. I'm beginning to wonder of it's really the right one.

When I run through this process the LED goes red and the alarm chirps when I open and close the door but the LED doesn't momentarily go out as the process says it should.

1. Close all doors, trunk, and hood.

2. The security system must be in "disarm" mode. The key must be removed from the ignition key slot.

Enter Code-Learning Mode
3. Open the trunk and leave it open.
4. Open the driver's door and sit in the driver's seat.
5. Close the driver's door.
6. Cycle the ignition switch five times between the "off" position and position 2 (ignition "ON", all dash warning lamps will illuminate). The red status LED will illuminate continuously, and the siren will "chirp" once, to indicate that the code-learning mode has been initiated.

DO NOT START THE ENGINE

The ignition switch cycling in step #6 must be performed within ten seconds.

The sequence in steps #1-6 must be performed within 45 seconds.

Registering/Delete ID Code(s)
7. Open driver's door, (remain seated in driver's seat)
8. Close driver's door.
9. Press and release any button on the remote you wish to register into the system. The status LED will shut off momentarily to indicate that one ID code has been registered.
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 to register the remaining three ID codes.

Exiting Code-Learning Mode
11. Open driver's door, and exit from vehicle, leaving the door opened.
12. Close trunk.
13. Close driver's door. The LED will turn off and the siren will "chirp" twice.
14. The initialization procedure is now completed, test all remotes to confirm operation

Ah just what I posted but are they the correct instructions? I would contact that seller to see if they will send you a pdf to be sure.

Saying that You must be doing something right if your getting lights and churps. I would repeat the process the four times so all slots are assigned to your remote.

I also found another thread where people have tried the remote for Subaru/BMW and say it only works if you desolder the chips from the old BMW board and solder it onto the Subaru board.

I called another remote sales company and they said they used to sell one for Subaru/BMW but they found out that this didn't work on the BMWs. I purchased a BMW remote from them for too much money but if it works it'll be worth it. I'm returning the one I have now that doesn't work. With the car going into programming mode so well I have a feeling this remote just won't work.

Thanks for your help with this. When the new remote comes I'll post my results here.

When in programming mode and you press a button on the remote the LED on the dash should momentarily go out but it doesn't so I don't think it ever programs. Makes me wonder if it's the wrong frequency.

The seller says it must be programmed by a dealer or locksmith. The dealership won't touch it being aftermarket and locksmiths don't seem to know what I'm talking about. One locksmith said he'd try it for $100 but didn't think it would work.
