I really don't understand! So does the key have a chip in it or not? Forget the alarm because it's disconnected. BMW tell me the keys are chipped-is that wrong?
The keys are chipped there is an antenna ring on the barrel assembly to sense it

John,
Out of interest when you ordered your new key - did BMW copy chip from existing key or did you have to provide vehicle documentation.

Agreed there is confusion - the immobiliser and alarm are two separate systems on this era of car.
The EWS alarm system does not immobilise the car - it remotely operates the central locking and alarms if anything is wrong. You can actually sit in the car with the alarm blaring away and start the car with the key.

I have done it before and have just been out to the garage to refresh my memory.

As an aside if you remove the ignition switch from the barrel and try to operate it (i.e.hot wire) it will not start unless the key is in the lock.

Sorry Geoff
Ok Jon you know very much more than the little that I know so sorry John that I have confused your issue just thought I was right but it would seem I am totally wrong. Sorry once again. Geoff

A lot of cars you can start and drive with the alarm blaring away. Separate systems.

Tony.

Re reading all posts from the beginning I can see that I got the wrong end of the stick( so to speak) and once again apologise to you John for getting it so wrong. Geoff
