The offset varies things hugely. One wheel which looks right then doesn’t appear to work based on a large difference in the offset. Ho hum. All in the name of fun!

John - No worries about the “Malcolm” thing, I’m used to getting people’s names wrong so it’s understandable!
I do like the style 42 and 78’s but the 32’s suit the Z3 better in my opinion, I find them less fussy. From what I can see they came as an optional extra for the Zed so having 17” (not 18”) would be in keeping.

Having said that are you able to post or send me a picture of the style 42 split rims as they sound great!
Will they be polished edges with silver centres?

Hi Martin,

The style 32 radial styling do come in 17", if your tempted you have to try and find a set with the 8.5" rears they look so much better than 71/2 all round.

I will be able to send some pictures in about a weeks time of the 42 Composite split rims, yes they will have a polished lip all round.

All 71/2" x 17" and also 8" x 17" wheels for an E36/E46Z3 and Z4 will fit without any issue including 81/2" rears. The Z3M 9" rear wheels will NOT fit.

Many 18" wheels will also fit from the Z4 and 3 series, some BMW 5 Series wheels may fit but the offset is wrong and they do not look right on the car, I've seen many 5 series wheels on offer from sellers to unsuspecting buyers but they are not a correct fit this could also lead to premature wheel bearing failure.

Kind Regards

john

Just noticed, you need to change your poll to Styl 42 composite bolted split rims, the style 42 silver painted standard wheels are only 16" so you will get a distorted poll.

Hi Martin,

Check these out- ebay reference 164438399005

Staggered style 32's Z3 fitment, it says no kerb rash but one definitely is. plus you'd need 2 new tyres.

Wanting £550, give a daft offer,

refurb and 2 tyres will cost you approx £300 extra.

They make my 78's and 42 split rims look too cheap...............!

Hi John

Thanks for the input. Im watching those alloys funnily enough. They aren’t as good as the description suggests as you’ve noticed too.
I’ve messaged the person, just waiting for a response.
In my opinion they’re asking too much for them.

If I’m totally honest I really like the split rims. I’ve found a few photos on google and on a topaz blue motor, well! Phwoar! (I’m having to eat humble pie)

I assume the attached photo is accurate?

thanks
Martin

A set of square wheels? Nah, that would never work, think about it! How about some Alpina Softlines like these?Image1433.jpg

Great write up on your car, I thoroughly enjoyed the read and the effort you have put into your Z, it's looking very smart. :scorecard:

Stagged type 18 17in 😁
I think we are spoilt for choice when it comes to wheels, there are some really great options to chose from Style 18’s included, one things for sure, you have to go staggered as Bonzeau commented Earlier.
Although I’ve got 78’s staggered I also have a set of brand new genuine BMW Style 78’s but 18” bolted split rims, I’m hoping they fit on my Z3 with 225’s front and 255 rears, if not I’ll be gutted. If anyone has any experience of 18’s please message and update me!

Just a quick update for anyone who was interested.

I settled on buying a set of style 42 split rim alloys from @Dakar Z3
Very easy and friendly fella to deal with. We met up at a service station, luckily timings and geographies all came together nicely.
John (Dakar Z3) has a great ability for sourcing alloys so he’s always worth a shout. The ones I got John had refurbed, they have polished rims and painted centres. To me they’re immaculate, John did his best to point out all the tiny faults, it should be the other way around!

Ill post some photos when I get the chance. Unfortunately they won’t have rubber or be on the car for a few months yet.

Dead right!
Thanks for for loading a photo for me 😂

I was hoping to hang around just to say hi to you too.
I was meeting a chap for an interview so didn’t have much time unfortunately.

How do yours look???

I was interviewing someone. He’s from Leicester so it was a perfect place to meet. As a bonus there was coffee and toilets!

the 78’s and 42’s are both great looking alloys. I couldn’t work out which set I wanted, which is funny as I was after the 32’s to begin with.

I’ve read about needing to heat the alloys. I’ve also read it isn’t necessary but I’d hate to snap one being complacent. I’d personally heat them!

I also looked at sourcing a “in need of TLC” set and refurbishing them myself. I know someone who could do mates rates on a standard alloys but he didn’t want to touch split rims and the prices I found locally were quite significant.

@Synclare have you got them on the car yet? I think you got them off of John with some rubber?
Where in the country are you?

Some rough pics of my new alloys, I’ve tried to show an over view and the worst bits that John pointed out to me which I’m perfectly happy with.
