In the midst of all the confusion in our country in the past few days, let us all take two minutes in perfect silence today to reflect and remember a hundred years ago, the enormous sacrifice made by ALL those brave men & women, no matter what country they were natives of, who fought for us so that we were free to make the choices that we made recently.

We will remember them!

Yes, Mike, the blunders of high ranking officers were beyond belief, the soldiers lives were just dispensable!!! Lions led by donkeys!!!

Many of the officers were public school recruits and received similar limited training to the regular lads. There are hundreds of graves bearing the names of 20yr old officers.

My thoughts are with those brave young men

Quite surprised that a few more of you didn't add to this memorial thread of the first terrible day of the Somme, especially after reading about your visit to the Menin Gate and how it affected you all.

The Menin gate was a moving experience and has already been commented on here, I follow the posts on this forum but do not feel I need to comment unless I can be constructive.
