Yes I have a 2008 123d, which is a twin turbo N47. Great engine overall and really good torque.

I did, however, have a couple of issues
  1. The intake manifold had a hole put in it from the inside out - £900
  2. The timing chain became rattly, so it was replaced - £1400
  3. Clutch was done in that price
The engine needs to come out to replace the timing chain, as its at the back. It was replaced with later BMW parts which apparently solves the issue for good. Later models shouldn't therefore suffer

We've just bought a 2005 120i SE for the wife. 80k on the clock

Things weve had in the first 2 months

Chain tensioner is too short: Replaced for £45 and about 2 hours on the spanners with the new uprated parts
Rear ABS rings corrode and fail: had one go already, new Driveshaft and sensor £140 and 4 hours work
uses a bit of oil but i think the CCV is knackered which is a £100 fix and about 5 hours work as the whole inlet has to be removed

My brother in law has a 2007 120d Msport 120k on the clock

he currently has these issues

Clutch and DMF rattle (google it!)
Rear ABS sensor ring gone (Same as ours)

the 118d /120d also have the problems associated with weak diffs and the chain tensioners

loads out there for the money, but i think there are lots more cars our there for 10k that offer better value for money

The older M47 engine had swirl flap failures that killed the engine. Removing the flaps fixed the problem

When I was looking at a 1 series and asked a N.Z. BMW forum about the N46 engine one reply hit the mark "run". Seems the N46 likes to leak oil, from anywhere it can.

A relative has a 130 and loves it. Known 6 cylinder engine in a small car.

Was your chain and clutch done at BMW for £1400? and at what mileage?.

when you say later models, do you know what was the year that it was put right?
It was done at a friendly independent at just before 100k miles.

Isn't the chain at the front on a petrol model? My understanding is that the diesel models had the real issues

Different engines...

Replace chain tensioner on 2007-2012 diesel engines £1250 minimum. hence the concern

Yup that's why we bought a petrol.

Wouldn't touch a n47 with a bargepole

I think pretty much all the 4 cylinders of this generation are prone to mishaps

BMW i6’s seem to be much better than their i4’s even on Z3 you see how the i4 blow head gaskets frequently.

Perfect excuses to get a 130i and save on big repair bills - Man maths at work!

(Just don’t talk about high pressure fuel pumps and injectors, although I think that was the 3.5i engines only?)

Provided its had the work (with proof) they should be fine

I'm currently considering what to replace it with... Either an M235i or a 435i :racecar:

I should have also mentioned that affected cars should be covered by a recall. The work done depended on the tension i.e. Some got a full chain, others got the top chain only (like mine)

after reading this:
http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62400

I was somewhat re-assured about the later model diesels, and I found one with full BMW history and 52000 miles. No noises whatsoever.
Full black leather heated sport seats, M Sport suspension and bodykit.

so its now mine..

so this is the stable now.... note the sign on the garage
