Almost true @lowrider but I have a HT for a reason and as long as the car will start I drive it, snow, sleet or rain!! Don't forget I was a mail man and nothing stops us from our rounds; same with our cars not like those of you that park them inside if there's a cloud in the sky. Come on over and give it a try, you'll love it!! LOL. JIM

had my m44 just over a year now bought it cheap and expected to have to do a few jobs... engine wise new cam sensor, new thermostat, set of plugs as one was arcing, diff, gearbox and engine oil... blown out the air filter with my compressor as it looks in good order, removed throttle body and give it a good service, and at same time removed some stubborn rusted in screws on the idle control valve, and the throttle pos sensor.. idle control valve cleaned, remove airbox and cleaned it all out as very dirty with leaves and sand in it.... runs a lot smoother now... fuel economy was pretty bad when i had it but loads better now probalby 35 to 40 mpg

I've now got 2 Bmws with the M44 which have both done approximately 60000 miles and have been completely trouble free and don't use a drop of coolant or oil.

Keep an eye on the thermostat casing and the expansion tank, I changed both on the zed as a precaution as the parts are so cheap also if you get a lumpy idle clean the idle control valve out with some carb cleaner and change the ccv valve also the camshaft sensor can play up and manifolds have been known to get hairline fractures but I can't think of any other problems that the M44 is known for.

The one in the zed had over 8 litres of oil in it as the previous owner didn't know how to read the dipstick and it still ran ok and didn't do any damage so the M44 is a strong little engine.

I noticed on an old bill mine had a new expansion tank about a year before I purchased it presumably a leak so obviously a weak spot.
So one less thing to worry about and new coolant as well at the time.

Have had my M44 for 7 years has now got ~80k on clock. There was a gap in service history when I got it, so serviced it at 6 monthly intervals for first 3 years but have now relaxed that.
Have done 3 European road trips (Northern Italy, South of France and Western France/North Spain) without problems.
Only problems that have needed actual fixing were leaking profile gasket on rocker cover, oil filter joint to block and expansion tank bottom seal.
Numerous other engine related items changed on a precautionary basis include water pump, thermostat, cw hoses, expansion tank, fuel injectors.
