02 sensor help

Hi all,

I have been having problems with my 2.8 recently (infact since I got in in one guise or another but that's a story for another time)

I have plugged into a fault reader and the crankshaft sensor and 02 sensor need replaced.

I have sourced a crankshaft sensor but can't find an 02

Does anyone have a UK link to the proper 02 sensor for an MY98 2.8 please? From what I can see there is only one 02 sensor on the car - located just after the cat.

I believe the o2sensor is the lambda sensor. Could be wrong but i am sure someone will be a long and either confirm or tell you whst it is

Agreed, I believe the 02 and lambda are the same. Any steer on a good replacement, even be it OEM, would be appreciated.
 
Hi guys, the Lambda is the O2 sensor, there are 3 listed for the 2.8, 1 front and 2 rear.

It will be worth getting underneath and having a look to confirm though, my 1.9 is listed as 2, but only has 1 pre cat. I think it was around 2000 when oems had to fit both pre and post cat by legislation requirements.

Eurocarparts are good for cheapoe OE parts snd pattern parts, or try coopers bmw if you want OEM, if you give them your vin they tell you exactly what you need.

Be interesting to know how many required.

I will contact Europarts asap. Unsure which needs replacing though as the fault reader only specifies 02 sensor, it doesnt say which one sadly..
 
Hi - don't know what fault reader you are using but are you sure these are current faults and not historical ones stored in memory? If you are using INPA, then it will show a fault code and the number of events or at least it does on my '98 1.9*. To establish whether it is still current you need to either clear error memory, drive it and re-check if error report re-occcurs or make a note of number of events, drive and re-check. Agree with earlier comment that OEM shows 2 sensors before and after cat for '98 but there is only one fitted.

* it may be different on later models.
 
Code reader i used is a friends, it is a snap on eithos (£1200) the old faults did come but cleared when prompted.

The crankshaft position sensor was also gone, changed it and the fault cleared.

The 02 is still showing but I have yet to drive it since the CS sensor was changed. I will know more at the weekend and will update.

Going to lift a sensor today all being well. Meantime the fanbelt snapped on me :( I'm not having much luck with the zed

I should mention, I also had to change crank sensor due to a fault, bad starting no power/torque etc. The car starts fine now but is still down on power, at least it was for 2 mins until it snapped the fan belt.
 
Just another update, the 02/lambda sensor (of which my car only has one apparently) was not in stock. Upon further inspection, the fan belt was the least of my problems, the water-pump pulley had snapped X(

Things are going from bad to worse :-s

Trying now to find a replacement pulley, belt and 02 sensor
 
Hopefully once you've got it sorted it will put a huge grin on your face :steer2)
 
Early cars have one sensor just before the cat, where as later cars have a second sensor after the cat as well. Take care when changing the sensors as they can be seized due to high exhaust temperatures, it's quite easy to damage the thread and ending up needing a new cat as well....
As for the other problems, is he water pump turning ok, I'd be inclined to change that as well while you have it in bits.

Mine seems to be an earlier set up (1998) with the one sensor. I have ordered a pulley waterpump and fan belt, as you rightly say, may aswell change all when this far.

NEXT JOB; Just need to get to the bottom of the loss of power :steer1)
 
Finally sorted.

Changed the 02 sensor, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, waterpump pulley, waterpump, fanbelt and still problems.......took off the cat and it was fooked! Emptied the contents and the car is now going great! I have given it a full clean and will post pics soon..
