I would not say it is better than the Z3. It is just more refined and more room in the cabin and the boot. Plus it has a few more thins that are better. Such as the roof not needing to be latched/unlatched manually and depending on extras, cup holder, memory seats and aux for the ipod

The Z4 surely has to be a better car? I can't imagine BMW going backwards with a new car (over the Z3).
I agree with Bill and wouldn't say it's a better car but is definitely is more refined and more suited to being an everyday day car in my humble opinion. Two different animals. I'm very happy with mine and after all it's only 3 years newer than my Z3 was.

Tony.

Manufacturing techniques evolve and develop over the years. Body strength increases. Electronics provided greater and finer control. This inevitably makes improvements and changes big and small. Does that make the Z4 a better car over the Z3?
In some ways then it probably does, but then, one man's improvement takes away something that someone else enjoys. Pays you're money and all that....

Been looking at the prices of them a nice black 3.0 on gumtree on a set of acs alloys and red sports interior.
But must z4's have quite high mileage when you look but like anything a few gems

We recently bought one for £3,850, it's the 3.0se with, hard to find at this price, heated memory MSports seats, M/F steering wheel, bluetooth communication upgrade, xenons, 85000 on the clock.
Bargains out there to be had if you look.

That looks a bargain at that price. There are some really cheap ones out there you just have to be quick to snap them up when you spot them. As has been said earlier they pop up at good prices and are gone within a day or 2.

Pre-facelift roof motor can go at anytime unless its been moved to the boot if it is working. Worth doing by all accounts. A faulty one can be expensive to fix :(.
So am I right in thinking that the roof motor issue was addressed by BMW on the facelift? If so what year did the facelifts start and what are the visual differences on the car so I can spot a facelift?

I think it was 2006 Alan, but someone may tell you different. The facelift ones have different front fog lights and a side reflector/marker light in the front wheel arch/bumper joint.

Tony.

ps. Also the rear lights, although the same shape are constructed differently regarding the lights within the lamp unit itself. The one in my avator is the early type.

In all honesty, before I went Z4 think I would prefer to go Merc SLK Kompressor.
€ 3.600,-

Oh, and by the way @Redline, as discussed tonight, drag & drop does work, as that is what I have just done with above photo.

I've bought my Z4 from eBay in April 2016. Paid around 5k. Since then replaced the whole suspension (I mean everything, even a bolts and nuts), brakes (I mean everything, from callipers to disks, pads and hoses) , all 4 wheel hubs, various belts and rollers, countless little thingies like alloys refurbishment or new radio. I think I've already spent on the car something around purchase price. But now it is mechanically like new. Still need to do some exterior and interior stuff. When I bought it it had 84k miles, now 102k. Never ever before I've spent that ridiculous amount of money just in first year of ownership.

But, I never regretted this purchase. I went for e89 test drive when they was available on dealerships, but found that e85 is much more my car.

So, be prepared to spend heavily, or if not - better look to tidy e89 on finance. Could turn to be cheaper. These days it is hard to find perfect e85, they are either abused and neglected or not on sale.

The roof motor did not get addressed on the facelift models. I have the si and it is still in the same location and is the same motor as the older ones, so i can not see how it was addressed. I have read on the Z4 forum of them failing on the facelift models.
The main difference between the 2 versions is that the facelift comes with clear lights not tangoed ones. Also as @t-tony says the front bumper is different as they have different fog lights and also the Engines used were the N52B25 in the 2.5 and the N52B30 in the 3.0 Which are both lighter blocks than the M54 engines hence why they became quicker
Apart from that not much

Mostly what bills said above, but additionally to the lighter block there were a few extra tweaks on the Si engines to increase power. Such as an electric water pump to reduce engine load. Can't remember the full list though.

I had one of them and it bored me to death. Went for that instead of a Z3 at the time, but soon went back to a BMW
