Used Hankook Ventus in the past and they are epic for the money

Rainsports are awesome for the UK as they have really good wet grip but asymmetrical so no good for camber wear

I was reading on a web site today that the majority of manufactures performance tyres are now coming out with 7mm rather than the expected 8mm, one way of getting us to buy them quicker. o_O

I've noticed lately at work the cheaper tyres generally have more tread.

But the last set of Mich Alpine A4 winters I bought --- say quitetly wife Nissan QQ--- had 8.8 mm according to my cheap device. They still have 6mm after 2 winters
My Pirrielli winters had over 8mm at start.

Winters have to be deeper to work. They also have a second set of wear bars that are higher than the usual ones to show when they have worn down to a depth making them no good for winter but still legal.

Maybe the manufacturers should have to state the new tread depth so its clear what you're getting. I'd assumed that all new tyres start with 8mm.
Like food manufacturers, I can see the tyre makers slowly reducing the amount of tread on new tyres to reduce costs and get you to buy again sooner. Am sure many drivers have no idea how many miles they get between changes.

If you don't have a degree of cynicism you'll soon be conned. Always question the claims and motivation of any manufacturer.

Yep redline you hit the nail on the head there, buy a brand new car , for example they will do 18.000 miles, replace them with the exact same tyre from said dealer, they will do 16.000 miles, reason for that, all rubber is graded ,car manfuctures grade a rubber, and racing industry, everything else is grade b, grade a rubber is so expensive , to make a new car feel amazing over the bumps, don't take my word for it though, ask a tyre manufacture ,and they'll sheepishly tell u that.

Are original fit tyres different from those we buy ourselves? I didn't know that!

I have only ever had conti sports in 9 years of owning Zeddy and other than the cost! I can't fault them.

You are probably right in saying that Ian, and if so who is the idiot.

Hi I have Falkens on my 3.0i, sorted the tram lining out, and handles well.
Unless you are going to track day it there's probably only a small difference between top makes, just how deep your pockets are.

Speaking of tyres i parked the Zed up after the Cotswolds run 260 miles I've been away a couple days only to come back to see the Zed has a flat tyre. :( it has a puncture it has a small pin in it, when wetted it bubbles so will try to get it fixed tomorrow.
