Does anyone know how to identify front (and rear) springs from sight? Do they have a dob of colour or something on them?

I can't find the spring on realoem. It just says no matching part.

I like things stock so I want to make sure I have the right part and if not how to buy the right one.

How strange on OEM just checked for my 1.9, same result as you.
Quick look at Carparts4less for your 2.2 listed fronts and backs the front ones differ if manual or automatic, I would assume they are standard springs.

Europarts are more expensive but have 30% off everything this weekend ends today

BMW match the springs to the weight of the car, that is why real OEM does not show a part number. A call to your local dealer will confirm the correct part number.

I don't trust web sites like that to give the correct info I'm afriad. I checked before with the struts and they were all over the place. Not recognising eg difference with Sport parts. I'd only rely on what another enthusiast said from experience to be honest.

Fair enough thanks. But how do I know what is on my car currently?

Well if they are standard, go to BMW and let them punch your VIN number into the computer and I'm quite confident it will spit out the correct part number.

I've actually found the BMW parts prices to be quite reasonable. I replaced the rear shocks and top mounts with parts from BMW (they didn't fit them of course now THAT is expensive!)
