Morning everyone,

Such a basic question but it’s been a long time….

Z3. 2.2. 2002. I can never remember what type of oil and my light has come on. 5/30? Need to get some…. Always have a complete brain block over this and haven’t filled it for ages.

You do know that it needs oil all the time, don’t you?!? And water?!?
 
The original oil was 0W 30 fully synthetic but with a high mileage, I have changed to 5W 30.

Yes i would also say 5w 30 but would add make sure its a suitable oil for your engine.
In my work we have around 10 different types of 5w 30 for different types of engine petrol and diesel.
For just top up its less important but for a full change the right type would be required
Just as an example
I have a Peugeot to do an oil change on
this is the Mobil oil to go in it as you can see its a 5w 30 but for Peugeot / Citroën engines.

^ that’s true..make sure it’s fully synthetic and also if you look on the back it should say which manufacturers it is compatible with. For a Zed you want Longlife-01 LL-01 or LL-04.
Modern cars are more sensitive to the oil you use particularly those with wet cam belts.
 
I use 5w/40 in my M54 engine (same as the OP, just different displacement) as it is getting old (like me).

I used Millers last time but have noticed it doesn't look too tricky considering it has done all of 200 miles since changing (2 years though).

The 'rule of thumb' is that any oil is better than no oil! ;)
