Hi I’m known as Pete however, I have been called most things in my life time and normally answer to most them. I live in a village in Leicestershire with my wife Sue, we have lived in our village most of our life and we have two sons and four grandkids. I am passionate Motorcyclist since I was a teenager and was a professional test rider for 5 years, I am a advanced rider and currently volunteer for a Leicestershire based Blood Bike group and been a member for seven years.
I am a time served engineer and had many positions working for company’s and started my own company in 1991, and run it for 28 years before taking early retirement in 2019. My eldest son was in the business from the age of seventeen and now runs my business with my youngest son.
I am petrol head and always been in to Motorbikes and cars, and have a fair bit of mechanical knowledge with cars and motorbikes, but these days I prefer sitting at the side of my bikes I find it a lot easier than the cars, but having said that I have have done some work on the Z4.
I bought my Z4 when I retired from work mainly because I had company cars for many years and always hankered after a E85 Z4 roadster with a straight six engine and I already had a big car for daily use. I saw my Z4 advertised locally and went to have look at it and fell in love with straight away it was black 2005 E85 2.5 Se roadster with 52,000 mls on the clock. . I had to spend a bit of money on the suspension and bushes for a start, then I took the run flats off and fitted standard tyres, it was lethal with the run flats. Later I bought a set of second hand Z4 2006 face lifted wheels, had them stripped and powder coated in standard BMW silver and fitted Pirelli P zeros front and rear. That transformed the looks for me, I have recently fitted new bi xenon halo head lights, now it looks super cool at the front and I can see at night. This year I had sensor problems with the dashboard looking like a Christmas tree, so I took it in to a specialist to look at the problem and repair it if possible, 3 weeks later in the garage and it was fixed but it cost me a grand, but all good now. The car is running pretty good at the moment, we have just been on a European tour and covered about 1800 mls with only two problems, the battery failed and I had to have a new one fitted, and when I rev it past 4000 rpm it brings the engine management light on and goes in to limp mode, which is not good in the fast lane of a motorway. So if one has any idea what it might be I would be grateful of a reply, I can’t reset it with my OBD reader but it does show lean on bank one & two, it runs perfectly well under 4000 RPM.
Thank you for listening to me ramble on, but I did try to keep it short.

Have to say Pete that must be the best new member introduction I have read - you covered all the relevant topics from road trips to maintenance and even included a phot of your Z4. Top job mate

Now as for your problem I will have a stab at answering it but I am far from an expert and tbh everything I know (and in most cases have subsequently forgotten) I picked up from the pages and members of this forum.

I had a very similar situation with an E89 I recently purchased - every time I gave it the beans the engine warning light cam on and it started to run very rough.

A few forum posts suggested it could be the ignition coils and discussed how to narrow this down by swapping them around. I didn't bother with any of that and just bought six new coils and six new plugs along with a plug extractor and a torque wrench. Once they were all replaced the problem did not return. Hope that helps.

Hi Pete and :welcome: to the forum from me too in Stafford. It was great to meet you in Calais last week and chat Zeds;). Pleased to see you have signed up, we'll help you spend your money. Maybe see you again on a meet or a run out 🤞

Hi Ricky, Glad you liked my intro, I thought it was a bit long winded, but when I get going can’t stop!

Thanks for the heads up on what you thought the fault maybe with my Z4, I think at the moment it could be many things. I have been up to garage whereI I have the Z serviced and had a word with the technician who works on m Z, about the problem and he said it could be several faults, however, he reeled a couple off what he thought it could be. First one he said could be the inlet manifold sucking in air and could effect the combustion, and secondly the sensors on the cams that alter the timing as the motor revs to 4000 RPM, he said either of those would bring rhe engine management light on and put it in to limp mode. So I am taking it in on Thursday so he can check it out with his equipment and hopefully come up with an answer. The Mechanic who carries out the work on my Z is X BMW technician is at an age of experience.
it may be what you have suggested yet, and I will mention the coils and see what is thoughts are on that, but thanks for putting that forward.

Hi Mint, pleased you back home ok. it was nice meeting you and your wife last week in Calais, we really enjoyed our chat about Zeds and our travels in Europe. Thanks for the info to join the zroadsters forum, it sees a really good site so far and loads of information on hand and the members are friendly. So hopefully I won’t ask any stupid questions, to you Z enthusiasts 😬 because the only experience I have is my own Z, but there is loads of information on this forum to learn about all of the Zeds manufactured by BMW.
We look forward to meeting up with you both on a meet or run out, cheers. Pete & Sue
