I've been unable to start my car for the last few days. Each time I tried, I had the same result, which was I could hear a turning noise, but the engine wouldn't start. I would be pressing the accelerator pedal on and off while turning. Prior to this it was working fine, and normally I use it as a daily.

I did not persist the first few times as I was worried about knackering/killing the battery, and I did not need it as it was xmas/new years period. I put it on charge but found it was already fully charged. No surprise as it's a new battery which was fitted in August.

I spent this morning reading a few "crank but no start" threads on the forum, and I went back armed with a list of "easy fixes" to try, including disconnecting and reconnecting battery (camshaft sensor?), and checking over all fuses.

Before trying these fixes, I thought I'd try turning it on one last time. I held the key for quite a while (must have been about 10 seconds), and I could hear the spinning get faster and faster. This was the first attempt which I filmed.

The second attempt I held the key turned for even longer, and also held the accelerator pedal down to the floor. and the spinning got faster and faster until it turned on!

I was just wondering if anyone on here might have any clues as to what happened, why wasn't it turning on. Do I need to be worried about it not starting in future? I have experienced various ignition issues on previous cars of mine, but have never seen anything like this that got better just by holding for longer.

You should press the accelerator pedal to the floor and just continue cranking till it starts. Do not “pump” the pedal up and down.

That was flooded, easily done on these. In future, pull the fuel pump fuse out and crank it with the throttle wide open until it starts and burns off the fuel in the cylinders.

I’m having a problem and can’t figure out what’s wrong with my z3 1996 1.9. I was recently driving and hard a pop pulled over and my crankcase hose connected to the pcv was off the engine and white smoke was blowing. I replaced the hose tried starting the car and there was 0 oil in it. I bought new oil put it in and still no crank.
