Well, after 12 months of trouble and stress free motoring with my Z4M-Roadster, I took my car in to get a service and MOT with a BMW specialist a few miles from me in Oxford. (Mark Purcell). There were a few small items we knew needed sorted, such as a new LED brake light for the boot lid. However, as soon as I got out of the car, I realised that the rear springs had finally busted on me, as the car was leaning to the right (which is had been doing for most of the year) much worse than before. Straight away I should have realised that things were going to get painful!

As Poppa was driving us back home, Mark called Poppa's mobile and my heart sank so quick, that if I had farted I would have crushed my heart! Mark had my car on the ramp and things were not looking good. The break lines were in a corroded state and needed a full replacement, both rear springs were broken (I had noticed a lot of rattling when stood outside of my car, which was identical when Poppa's previous E46 M3 Cab had the same thing happen. The biggest "oh sh!t" moment is when he told us I needed a new steering rack. There was also some issue with part of the front right suspension (can't remember what is was, but when Mark showed my Poppa, there was play that would be another knocking I would hear at times. I was so utterly heartbroken at this point, as bar this bombshell, the last 12 months owning this car has been a joy! Oh, the fix that was done under warranty for my right rear backbox (flange had rotted away) is still holding up, but my folks decided to approve Mark replacing the section as there is also some major dents where the car has bottomed out due to the rear springs being snapped.

Poppa dropped me off and went back to the garage, so Mark could show him everything that was wrong, as Mark is really good at not taking the p*** with his customers cars and cards. Both my reassured me not to worry about it (Stress is not something that I am able to cope with too well, as it causes my back to get really painful from the tension), as they didn't want me getting upset (Even though I am part of Generation X, I would hate for people to think I am some snowflake millennial, who can't cope with real life. Stress makes me muscles start to bunch up and freeze on me. This is so bad with all of my spinal damage) due to my back etc.

My folks decided that there was enough value in the car (as well as Mark saying that they were right) that it was worth forking out several thousands. Mark said, that bar the issues he found, the car was actually in really great condition for it's age and mileage ('07 with 100k miles). Thankfully after inspecting it all over for rust, which my three previous cars ended up suffering with so badly, that I was always embarrassed at car meets when I took them. This last year, I have made sure my Z4M is always garaged at night and I've not been driving in the rain that often and have kept off the roads when they would be gritted.

When everything is done, I've been told that I will have a really great car and I should feel a drastic change in the cars behaviour on B roads, which considering my folks and I are moving to a village near Hereford, will be a common occurrence from the start of next year.

On a side note, I can't believe how much my insurance has dropped. Admiral had reduced it down by £200 , which made it about £860, but I decided to use Compare The Meerkat to see if I could get it lower. I then had 3 established companies offer a better all round coverage (more miles, lower excess and breakdown cover) for £489!

Silver lining on the Insurance side. Will be an even better car when you get it back.
Having your Z4M back will be the best medicine you can have

Yeah. I've been with Admiral for the last year and they were a easily the cheapest I could get at the time. I had to phone them this morning as they automatically renew the policy and won't let you cancel online. After telling them that I had 2 different companies offer me a price of £489 with a 6000 mile allowance (currently had 5000 miles, which much to my surprise I've almost managed this year, when the previous 11 years I've never done more than 3000!) , lower excess charges too, they started working on lowering the price. Best they could do was about £570 (from £890), where they would give me a full years no claim on a 10 month policy. I really don't like how they don't even bother to give their best figure for renewal, as they know most people won't call to get it lower!

With us moving to a small village a few miles out from Hereford, my mum has agreed with Poppa and I that we do need to have a 3rd car and it being a 4x4, ideally the original Range Rover Sport. With me getting my first dog once we've moved next year, it will be nice to have the rear space for my new dog and eventually mums new dog to sit in. Also for longer trips to see family down south, a Range Rover Sport will have enough room and comfort for the 3 of us to travel in (typically I will drive on my own following my folks). So with me being a named driver on the "family runabout" and on whatever naughty sports car Poppa gets (I think a AMG C or S class Coupe or Convertible)

Sorry to hear if your woes, apart from the steering rack it all sounds age related stuff. I do have a pair of rear Z4M springs I would happily give you, they are used but seem to be in good condition.

Cheers

Brian

You are totally correct, which is one reason why I think my folks told me not to worry about things too badly. My Poppa was telling me that the front shocks might need some parts replacing, but the rear springs was something we knew was going to happen. Poppa's E46 M3 Cab had both springs snapp/break on him and I should have remembered the rattling sounds it made, as my Z4M has been pretty bad since I went to view what is going to be the new family home in Hereford a few weeks ago. The springs on the right rear have never been totally right, as the car did have a lean to the right very slightly, ever since I got it. With me now knowing that both rear springs have gone, it might explain why I have never felt the rear was as stable as I expected.

Thanks for the offer on the rear springs, but the replacements arrived and got installed today, so they are not required. You offering them to me just goes to show the much friendlier spirit found on these forums to "newer" member than other car/BMW forums I've used.

The car only went over 100,000 miles a few months ago and I did expect some bigger cost items to be due replacing before too long. I'm glad that I've been keeping my millage down, as I didn't want to go over the allowance on my insurance policy. At least with it coming up now, I do know it's going to be handling much better as I will start the new year getting use to living in a small village, rather than being around a residential area 90% of the time, here in Oxford.

After all of the parts etc have been replaced, the last thing left to do is to get some new wheels and tyres for my car. The tyres are coming up to 4 years old in March 2020 and after the Paul Walker crash, I have been really weary about having old rubber on the car. My wheels have corrosion issues now, which makes it believable that the break lines were also in need of replacement. Thankfully I've not been leaking any hydraulic fluid or engine oil, but oddly enough the windscreen washer jets have a pretty bad leak and all of the bonnets water piping is getting replaced. My old man wanted me to refurbish the wheels, as one of them has a slow leak which we've tried a number of things so the beading would seal properly, but we've only managed to slow the rate down. I really want a set of Alpina wheels (like they used on the E30's to E46's), as I think they will really suit the shape and styling of the Z4MR. It might be that next year, I will be able to replace my Z4MR with a Z4MC, as we will have the space to have 3 cars again, which would allow him to get either an AMG C , S or SL class or another BMW M car.

If my old man gets an M car again, at least I now know there is a simple conversion "kit" that allows people to get rid of the SMG system and have it as a manual, thanks to the quirky solution BMW used to have a paddle shift gearbox. From the videos I've seen about this, it's much simpler on a BMW SMG , than doing a manual conversion on a Ferrari Challenge Stradale.

When you move to Hereford you are about 45 mins from me and the Zedshed west if you ever need a hand

That would be awesome, as I am totally new to the whole area and it would be good to be able to connect with petrolheads and learn some decent driving routes and roads. We have almost got all the contracts signed on both sides, so I should get a move date in the next couple of weeks. I really wanted to move before the end of the year, but we're guessing early Jan 2020 as our escape from the car hating hellhole called Oxford.

Hey, I've moved to a small village outside of Hereford four weeks ago! Maybe we can meet up and have a mini cruise in the summer.

I'm moving to a village called Kingsthrone. Have you heard/know of it at all?

The thing that has shocked me the most about our move up to Hereford is the massive difference in price. We live in a 4 bed detached property here in Oxford and compared to our new house, it feels tiny. Yet it's cost my folks about 45% of the price we accepted on our Oxford home! When my health declined so badly after I suffered my original spinal injury, there was no way I was going to be able to ever get my own place and sine 2007, the value of the houses have just kept going up, as the demand for accommodation in the area of Oxford we're based is fierce. You've got Brookes Uni students competing against people who work at one of the 3 big NHS hospitals. Our Oxford home had not been put onto the estate agents website, before we had managed to get offered over the asking price. With two doctors actually being the ones to have their offer accepted. Yet the house in Hereford has been on the market for over a year and is so amazing, with everything all 3 of us have wanted in a family home.

The car scene that I have been involved with here in Oxford for the last 10 years, is very JDM focused and when I joined them for my first meet, I felt so out of place in my '85 E30 Alpina C2 2.5 . A year or so later, I got myself an Subaru Impreza P1 and in the 6 years I owned it, I got to go to so many meets and shows with all of them, that they are friends outside of cars now. I hope to find the same sort of thing again in Hereford, but after the ballache of dealing with rust on a JDM car, I'm going to stick with either BMW "M" cars or Alpina's. If I don't get a Z4MC, I really want to get myself either an E46 M3 Coupe or the E46 Alpina B3 3.3 Coupe, as having the back seats will make it easier for me to drive with my dog (I'm getting a black lab puppy in the new year).

The chap who is selling us the house with his ex, owns an M4 Coupe and told me there are so good roads further on from Hereford, that are not flooded with speed cameras every couple of miles and the road surfaces seem heaps better than I am use to in and around Oxfordshire. When I went into Hereford city centre after we viewed the house, I kept noticing a lot of really nice "interesting" cars (basically sporty) and guessed there must be some car scene in the area, but when I was searching via Google and Facebook, I was not able to find anything right off the bat.

I would be more than happy to meet up and do as much car stuff as possible, especially once it's spring and show (and meet) season start up again. I can't work on my own car due to my back not being able to bend forwards or stand still , before I start to feel a great deal of pain, which makes me feel guilty, as so many people I have meet since getting my Z4MR, have invited me to take part in garage get togethers etc. If you want, I can PM you my contact info and we can sort something out ASAP?

Cheers,

Dan

Yes I moved from the Kent commuter belt, from a 3 bed semi to a larger new detached for less than half the price. Oh, and much better roads!

We're moving to a 20 year old 5 bed detached house, that is just stunning. It's actually a 3 floor layout (it was built with what looks like the loft space, as a proper floor, but it doesn't stand out) and the top floor is basically going to be just for me. So I can have a bedroom and living room, but with everything adjusted for someone of my height, as "standard" height worktops etc, cause me to bend forward enough that I am unable to do so many things without paying a price in pain every second. What I really took notice of when we were looking round the area, is just how less crowded the place feels. I think the physical size of the city is roughly the same as Oxford city centre, but there is about a 5th of the population size, which is something that was important to me. Even with me being well over 6'4" , people bash into me so much in Oxford, which with all my nerve damage, has had the effect I've stayed away from the damn place for years!

I think I'm going to find it very surreal for a long time once we've moved over to Kingsthorne, as it's going to encourage me to get out much, much more. When my black Lab puppy arrives next year, I am able to instantly turn from the bottom of the drive and onto a country footpath and dog walking areas and when they are not an option, the back garden is perfect for dog training!

They ain't cheap to fix when the big bills come in for sure and usually they come all at once. Well worth the effort for such a car though

The car has done me well for the last 12 months and bar the odd small thing, it's in really nice condition. For me, my biggest worry was finding rust in the bodyshell. My Alpina looked so tatty in the end as the rear arches were bad (typical e30 tbh) and my Impreza P1 went from being an utterly mint example to needing heaps of body work around the arches and sills, as it was sat on the driveway not being driven, as I was unable to drive due to my health at the time.

Once it's all been fixed, I am looking forward to taking it out and discovering how much of a difference I can feel. I am willing to bet that with the rear actually having springs that do their job, I will not find the car so skittish and feel much more confidence when out hooning.
