My Z4 (2005) has been classed to Euro3 petrol. I'm wanting to export the car, and as it's does not meet the Euro4 directive, I'm told to forget it. I'm surprised how bigger sized engines of the car are within the same country I'm aiming at, yet this model is poorly rated on its output. I know it's not engine size that determines its output, but I would expect a much larger engine to have higher emissions unless BMW have improved outputs on later models.. Can anything be done to improve its emissions output, and get to the Euro4 rating.

We might need more info regarding which engine is fitted in your car and where you're thinking of exporting to. This emissions thing is weird all over. We have rented almost new (a few thousand miles) Ford Mustangs in Florida where it states on a sticker under the bonnet that this vehicle is prohibited from use in California ! I have a feeling that this car is stuck with the Euro rating it has been given for the life of the car. For example I tested a 1 series BMW 1.6 petrol last Saturday and it failed the emission test miserably, and even though the test parameters are opened hugely on the 2nd. stage of the test it still failed. Is yours a 4 cylinder model?

    Tony.

It's a 2.2I SEC. The country is NZ. I want to go home with this car. The NZ ministry did its output Em. test and it got rated to Euro3. Euro4 would have been fine, but it's not there. There is quite a bit that comes out of the exhausts when it's idle, it's like it's on fire. Runs quietly, hardly a sound, just has a bad emissions output. Just to see what I can do if anything.

Have you got an emission test print out from previous M.O.T tests you can post please? A guy who used to work where I do emigrated to NZ a good few years ago and I remember the lengths he had to go to, to get his tools accepted for export into NZ. He had a 3 year old MX5 which he left with me to sell for him and forward on the money to him. Just not worth the effort to try to export it.

It is 4 cylinder. I hope it can be improved. But I don't want it seen to be modified. NZ transport will see that it failed it's assessment, and now it's been changed (if it can be) and it's then made it, so it's been modified, and then it takes another turn, as it's a modification, it can still fail it's entry. I have asked BMW. They may run away and hide. Too much work.

I will take a look at the print out. I do have the NZ report they made. I could find a way to get it here. The cost to import is surprisingly very low. If it's a small fortune to convert then I won't do it. I'll see what I can do to get the report posted here.

Thank you Mike. There were 3 other on the members map but they didn't even highlight their names when I added the@.

Attached print out from the transport ministry in NZ. They classed my car to Euro3. Euro4 emissions would have been ideal. I need to see if the emissions can be modified to E4, and how this works. If it can be done. Otherwise the dream of bringing this baby into NZ will not occur.

Hey there, how can I seek further advice or suggestions on this. I have gone to BMW, but I expect them to run away as it's likely to be too much effort to look at this. Cheers

    Hello and welcome.

The article below gives the emission limits for each level of Euro rating. Whilst it is worth investigation I suspect that modification to halve the emissions ( to get from 3 to 4) for your 2005 car could be rather expensive.

Might be worth considering buying a Z locally, or looking at Japanese imports to NZ that comply.

@Dobiwallah also llives in NZ, we visited him in 2016 when we went to NZ. He is pretty hands-on and may be able to advise you.
