My search continues for either a Z3 or Z4 and I wondered if the Z4 2.5 was a worthwhile choice, or is it 3.0 all the way? I have to say, I would favour a 3.0 even though I have never driven one and know nothing about the engines but if the right car came along at the right price, is it worth considering?

I'm still focussing on searching for a Z3 but it does seem there are a lot of the 4's out there!

The 2.5 has the same bhp as the Z3 2.8 and mine has more than enough oomph. If budget allows go for a 3.0, you've said it's your preferred choice so you won't be happy if you don't go for one.

I have the Z4 2.5 which i am warming too, after being a Z3 lover and still am, the one thing the 3.0 has over the 2.5 is a 6 speed gearbox. The 6 cylinder engine is a gem in both but for cruising it really would benefit from that sixth gear. If i had the choice yes it would be the 3.0 if i had the choice between a well sorted 2.5 and a not so sorted 3.0 then think i would settle for the 2.5 IMO neither would disappoint.

With the Z4 engines you can get two types of 3.0 litres, one is the M54 which is the older engine and the other the N52 (known as the 3.0si) which obviously is the newer. Both very different engines, both have their hang ups but Having owned both I would lean towards the N52. It's also more powerful and can achieve better MPG figures.

With the Z3 I have always favoured the 2.2 or 2.8. The 2.8 being my personal favourite, with not very much money you can achieve the same BHP as the 3.0 and have less issues. The M54 engines (2.2 & 3.0) have inherent moisture issues which mainly stem from short journeys and not getting hot enough also with gumming up oil scrapper rings 'Know these issue personally'

It's all down to price and condition really, none have major issues z3 or z4 just look for a car that ticks all the boxes.

My 2 pence worth :D

Just to add to what Lee said....
The 3.0SI has a considerable amount of additional power over the older unit, and, once you have driven both you will notice it.
It is as a consequence a bigger heavier lump up front making the handling a little less nimble.
