Had the car in for a MOT and it failed on the lower susp.arm ball joint and hand brake lever. The ball joint is worn and apparently you can push the handbrake lever down from the locked upper position. How easy is it to replace the ball joint any special tools needed? The handbrake lever is a bit strange, unusual to wear I would have thought, none for sale on eBay anyway.

Might be better to replace the entire wishbone and drop link rather than just replace the single ball joint, if one has worn the others won't be far behind. The ratchet teeth on the handbrake must be worn, needs to be taken out to see what state they are in, maybe use a file to dress the teeth so they latch and hold. Think it will be a bit of a pain to extract the lever you need to get under the car to do it and drop the propshaft to get at the handbrake cavity mounting bolts. Here is a link to BMW TIS page for dealing with it, its a Russian site that BMW haven't closed down yet. https://tis.bmwcats.com/doc1078989/
Should translate to English, I have it set to translate in my browser automatically when I access the site.
