So this year 12 of us have booked May to return to the Ring, having to rent two houses this time :D

Second trip last year she started to feel a bit wobbly at high speeds and at 168k miles it’s time to give the girl a re fresh.

Laid everything out yesterday to stock take and I think I’m very nearly there.

Also going to do a new article on shift pins for the Z4 gearbox, can’t find anything on the internet about it, can really feel how notchy mine is.

Also thinking for a bit of fun wrapping it in something. @Holliez4 has an idea of something satin.

Right! Finally found some time to strip the coupe apart reading for this years Ring trip. I’ve pre built the new subframe and arms, everything’s zinc/powder coated.

Pre built subframe

car airborne
IMG_5567.jpeg

these wheels will be painted back to their former glory in the future
IMG_5568.jpeg

the noise maker mod :D
IMG_5569.jpeg

didn’t take long to start getting everything off.
IMG_5573.jpeg

on closer inspection can see the front bushes falling apart
IMG_5575.jpeg

explains all the movement above 140mph hard cornering.

IMG_5576.jpeg

oh!
IMG_5577.jpeg

Will give the mounting points a clean back n re seal. Also got new brake lines front to back to fit.
IMG_5580.jpeg

starting to strip so we can move the diff and shafts over.
IMG_5581.jpeg

next up remove the gearbox ready for overhauling.
IMG_5587.jpeg

clutch is original 168k miles and 40+ track days.
IMG_5586.jpeg

had some life left in that disc
IMG_5588.jpeg

Release bearing well worn in :D
IMG_5593.jpeg

loads of life left….
IMG_5592.jpeg

Next for removal is the front brakes, these have had some serious heat treatment last year. I have wavy heat ripples.
IMG_5595.jpeg

IMG_5596.jpeg

I have new discs and new Ferrodo DS2500 pads to go back in

Car now fully stripped. Time to start fitting new bits.

I’ve noticed of late the gear change getting notchy so looked on real OEM to see if you can do the pins on this ZF box and found you can. Cost me £136 for the kit.
IMG_5600.png

Doing gears 1-4
IMG_5602.jpeg

same method as we do on the Z3 box.
IMG_5604.jpeg

big boy roller pin.
IMG_5611.jpeg

was a simple job overall.
IMG_5614.jpeg

might do a separate article as I don’t think this has been done before.

Got my moneys worth from those brakes, pads were so crumbly
IMG_5616.jpeg

diff moved to new subframe
IMG_5617.jpeg

outer arms added
IMG_5618.jpeg

just waiting on a few more bits to arrive now.

Made some progress last weekend. Annoyingly not as much as I hoped. Turns out the brake lines were wrong so we focused on other things.

Front brakes all rebuilt. Fresh discs and a set of Ferrodo DS2500 pads, can lean on these all day long and they never complain.
IMG_5668.jpeg
IMG_5670.jpeg

wheels looking like they need another refurb, hoping to go back to the original 2 tone
IMG_5673.jpeg

got the rear brakes all together. Saves the work once the subframe is up. Also cleaned them up with some fresh paint.
IMG_5674.jpeg

getting excited
IMG_5675.jpeg

last minute plan to replace the selector seal as it was weeping.
IMG_5677.jpeg

got some nice upgrades in the form of race mounts and some fresh gearbox mounts.
IMG_5678.jpeg

while I was under the car I noticed the subframe mount paint had cracked, as it will be years till I go under again thought I would take it back to bear metal and re paint.

IMG_5680.jpeg
IMG_5679.jpeg

the clutch kit arrived just in time. Can see quite a difference in quality when you compare a Sachs kit to an LUK kit. Plus the price is nearly double now.
IMG_5681.jpeg

now waiting on the last brake line to come in.

... I don't think there's not any item on this car that's not been removed or replaced...

Got a good 3 days on her to finish off the final touches. First job was getting the rear subframe in and torqued up.
IMG_5695.jpeg

IMG_5696.jpeg
236AE864-D7FA-45FD-A58D-4F6DA5351D61.jpeg

then I started assembling the clutch and gearbox parts.
IMG_5702.jpeg

IMG_5703.jpeg

this was tough. 60kg off the chest up and in. Was actually very easy, these you have to be careful installing as the majority of the bolts are Ali.
IMG_5705.jpeg

another little upgrade going in. Vibra-Technic engine mounts.

old soggy mounts
IMG_5708.jpeg

Nice race mounts
IMG_5709.jpeg

next in was the prop.
IMG_5711.jpeg

and torqued the arms along with setting the camber and toe to mid settings. Few shields later and the rest was back together.
IMG_5713.jpeg

IMG_5712.jpeg

Everything went perfectly today. Down on her wheels and so excited to test drive
IMG_5718.jpeg

after getting back the rear end now sits up high on firm bushes.
IMG_5722.jpeg

test drive was incredible, gear change is so sharp the clutch bite is very low. Just need a good clean and to setup the Geo. Need to get used to how she feels now.
