I have the Bluetooth prep in my car, what else do I need to be able to connect my phone handsfree? If I open the storage box in between the seats there is a button on the flap and a plastic holder that pops out.

Any ideas?

There should be another button in there to use to initiate pairing. Can't remember the process though. I found it rather fiddly to set up but once done it works fine.
Do you have the manual? I can email a pdf of the us version if you'd like a copy.

the problem is that current phones evolve much faster, in theory they should support original bt specs, but none of current phone makers test them to 10 years dated bt which we got on e85. So it may work or may not.

I thought backwards compatibility was an ITU requirement. I suspect the BT silicon supports old basic functions but the software in the phones doesn't. You won't get anything other than basic call control and address book features and it's probably the latter that don't work.
They were always and still are clumsy to deal with anyway. As long as you can do calls is enough - for us stone age people at least .
I don't see even apple trying to stand up against the UN (who oversee the ITU) and deliberately not implementing minimal BT functions underneath all the new fancy technology.

Yep correct, just basic features but that is all I need. TBH the pairing process was not too difficult one I was pointed in the right direction.

correct, but no one cares re good implementation and testing of dated standards, so legally they are here, but technically apple or samsung in case of court case always can find 0.01% of wrong implementation of bt 1.00 by bmw ;) So, rule is here, but no one want to go soo deep in details ;)

Let me know how you get on @Brian H I still need to pair mine.
Success @Lee, as long as you have the code to pair to the car it is quite simple to do. The instruction @Brian4 linked too above worked a treat.
