Friends of ours have a P reg Z3 in Silver with Red leather. Its a two owner car both same family, son then father. 77,000 miles with full service history. Always garaged and no expense spared on servicing. The father is thinking of selling but has no idea what to ask for it. Its a 1.9 in very good condition with long MOT.

I am not advertising this as for sale but would like him to get a fair price when he does get around to selling it.

Seen prices from £700 to £2500 so don't know what to advise him,

What are your thoughts.

If it looks a nice car which I'm sure it will with that history I think the top figure you've quoted is fair.

I think the top end is about right too. There's lots of cheaper ones around but for low miles and only 2 owners (and assuming its in good condition) I think you'll get at least that - but might have to hold for the right buyer. The 1.9s are never going to be worth a fortune (I should know I have one!) but they're getting ever more difficult to find in good condition and history..

I would agree top end, however seeing most people struggling to sell at reasonable prices doesn't bode well for us if we need to sell

There seams to be loads of 1.9 out there.
Granted their's will be in good condition but prices seam to be low

Any Z3 with an MOT is generally worth £1,000.

But I think talk of £2,500 is likely to be wide of the mark. The mileage is modest and the history may be good but id be looking to pay £1,750. I am undoubtedly on the tight side but there are plenty of nice 1.9s out there so usual supply and demand rules apply and I'd just keeping going until I hit one at that price and I'm confident I would. Anyhow id suggest unless it's a real spanker it's too much if it has a 2 in front of the price. £1,950 sounds about right.

And since none of us know the actual condition it could be a lot less. It could be well serviced but rusty sills, nasty seats etc.

People will pay good money for a proper car. There is a load of sh*** out there so when a nice example comes up with low miles and a good history, low ownership etc you'll be surprised what someone will pay. Not everybody wants a 6 potter. Us that run them know there isn't much in the running costs but newbies looking into getting one often favour the 1.9 not knowing this. Piston heads always seems to demand higher prices. I'd put it on there.

Start high or rather at your preferred price and come down if you have to, you can't go the other way.

Do you know if the bodywork is in good shape? I have a neighbour who bought a similar car recently, 45000 genuine miles, paintwork needs attending to - minor dents and scratches - sills perfect, factory spec - he bought it for £4000.

Thank you @DavidM. I rest my case. Don't sell yourself short. It's hard enough to earn it so why give it away?

If he is thinking of selling this year he needs to get moving. September/October will see price fall as demand is low. May be better to hang on until next spring and spend the winter getting it in top condition (cleaning and polishing to impress) and getting 12 months MOT on it if he wants a good price.
Unfortunately around £2k would be my estimate even if he does what I have suggested above.
