Hi I would like to purchase a Z3M at a reasonable price. I currently have a 2.2 Z3 which is great but would like something with a little more power. I am happy to do work if the car is at the right price. Thanks Chrisjw

Thanks for the advise and I must admit i'm torn. I like what i have now I guess if you like something and you can get the same thing but better you are always going to be drawn to it like a moth to a light. I'm taking mine to Spa at the end of the week and then on to France when I get back I will look again at what is around. I take it you have an M if you change your mind and want to sell let me know. Thanks Chris

A 3.0 or a 2.8 is 95% of an M for 50% of the money, but it's the extra 5% that makes the difference - oo er missus :)

They are money pits if you pay for labour. Parts are much the same price as any other car, unless you want a very special part and then the M factor is added to the price.

Or, if you just look at the horse power difference, you could say a 3.0 is 66.5% of an M (S54), then if you add the other differences you could see that figure drop further. Having said that I am massively biased!;)

Good luck with the search ChrisJW, I’m sure whatever you get will be a great car.

Hi, we have a 2.8 and an M and I have to say that in my opinion the 2.8 is no way 95% of an M. Both are great cars but the performance from the 3.2 M is in a different league altogether. We are booked to go to Italy in the M at the end of this month but when we get back it will be up for sale with around 60,000 miles for £18995. It is in great condition and you are welcome to view either before we go or on our return if you are interested.

I know how you feel Stacey I’ve had three people snooping at mine and asking my wife if I would sell it all by the looks of getting a silly bargain just because it’s been standing for over two years. In that time though it’s been turned over first time every time and have a room she’d loads of parts accumulated over that time and still adding hence project:) Takes a wile as some bits are pricey but not all and can do the mechanics myself so don’t loose the faith but then again you have another nice zed to fall back on. Where’s the jealous emoji?

My next restoration will more then likely be a Z3M, now that excites me, after all the 2.8 is almost done :D

Lazzydog demonstrates the problem do you pay the money for a low mileage M or pay less for a high mileage. I bought my 2.2 last year and put it on a 4k limited mileage having then to extend the mileage to 10k as I like to drive the car. I don't want to pay a lot of money for a low milage car and then be reticent into respect of using it and significantly upping the mileage and lessening the value.:meh:

If you are ok with spanners I do not think that mileage is a problem on these cars. Condition is far more important, particularly the actual chassis. Anything that bolts on is relatively easy and cheap to replace if you are not paying someone else to do it. Access to a pit or lift makes clutch and gearbox jobs do-able for the home mechanic and the engine is fairly bullet proof if given regular oil changes and a bit of respect from cold.
I looked at ours earlier, read the service history, checked out the new hood, immaculate paint and bodywork and nicely patina’d interior and thought “folk it”, let’s keep it.
Good luck with your search.

I think thats a wise move, if I had an M with 60k it would be staying put

I have a '98, 2.8 Schnitzen conversion with about 70k mileage and an '01 S54M with 57k miles. I am the 3rd and 2nd owner respectively. The 2.8 only has an oral SH, but the S54M has a file with every service, MOT and tax disc. The 2.8 is fun to drive, and relatively frugal on petrol. It is fast, and with the larger wheels and tyres certainly hugs the road. Engine has a lovely note that sounds like it has a.supercharger. The S54 is like a prancing racehorse - it is VERY rapid, but can be driven sedately. Petrol consumption in town especially is terrible. The engine note is much more 'grumbly'. If buying for investment, an S54 with FSH and low mileage is definitely an appreciating classic (only 79 RHD in a total production run of 102k). If driving for the pleasure and keeping prices reasonable, my vote would be for the 2.8. Eventually, I will sell the S54, and will keep the 2.8 until my knees give out and I cannot get in/out if it anymore ! That said, I am delighted to have the S54...
