Have you seen the price of replacement door pull handle on eBay? 200 quid or thereabouts.

Mine just broke. Plastic broken around the mirror adjust area. l'll have a closer look in the morning to see if I can figure out some way to reinforce/fix.

But is this common? Anyone have any novel fix ideas?

Common issue on the Z3. If you remove the door card you can fit a long mending plate across the back of the door card and fix the handle to this so the mending plate stops the handle from pulling through.
Not sure. Do you mean the bottom of the handle where it attaches to the armrest? Screws through from the back of the door card.

In my case it's broken at the top around the mirror adjuster switch.

I think you're talking about the bottom of the handle where it attaches to the armrest.

No definitely the top of the handle. I repaired mine in this way. I'm looking to see if I have a picture of it somewhere but can't find it at the moment. Either the handle itself breaks or the door card breaks away leaving the fixing loose.

I'm pretty sure I put the handle in place (door card off) and put a mending plate across the back of the door card, covering the handle with one of the mending plate holes and then screwed through into the handle so it was solid. I think there was a bolt that goes through the door card into the handle but the door card had broken around the fixing leaving nothing to secure to the handle. It is more common for the handle to snap though. But a repair should be able to be made in the same way.

The top of my handle screws direct to the steel of the door. Not the door card.

In any case. It's the handle that's snapped. Not the mounting.

My Handle broke at the top, inside where the mirror switch fits, I fixed that with epoxy a couple years ago. About 3 months ago the base of the handle broke and this also reinjured the mirror area. So, I haven't gone back to fix it yet, still pondering how to fix that or if I should pay $250 + dollars for a replacement. There is a company that makes inexpensive handles for BMW's but the Z3 is not in the catalogue :(

Mine broke about 10 years ago. Either side of the mirror switch the plastic is quite thin. A weak spot. As somebody else said, I don't know why they make that out of plastic. Back then I glued mine back together and glued in more strips of plastic either side to reinforce it. When it broke yesterday I'd completely forgotten that I'd already fixed It once. Only when I took it apart today did I have the DeJeVu experience and recognised my handiwork.

It was my repair that had come apart. Anyway. Fixed it again using the same method. Maybe it'll last another 10 years.

On eBay they go for around £200. But looking at RealOEM there's two prices. Leather version at over 200 but the non-leather handle is around $75.

Are those RealOEM prices supposed to be up-to-date?

UH, well the price list featured in "Realoem" might say it's $54, but ebay sure doesn't agree! Their handles are made of unobtanium and command astronomical prices.
