Hi folks, I am in need of renewing my 1998 Z3 2.8 middle and end section exhaust. My garage can find middle section but not the end....they suggest having it specially made. Has anyone had this problem. Has anyone managed to purchase this or have fitted? And what's the likely cost? Thanks. Nigel.

Thanks Isn but my garage are getting a stainless steel one made for me which is close by and I can take the car in for them to ensure fit etc. Thankyou anyway.

Mine cost me £80 from eBay, turns out it's a company (G T Exhausts) I knew from years ago and about 30 miles from me, but they still posted it for that price too. Mild steel only but a good fit.

Hi Ian, I don't think I got your PM.....the price quoted for the new exhaust is astronomical......what are the parts you have and cost please....it would be getting them here and then fitted which may be difficult...thanks. Nigel

When my front silencer fell to bits inside, and the rear had rust spots all over it, I had a stainless cat-back system made by MTJ exhausts of Walsall, designed to give equivalent noise levels to an E36 saloon. It mad a big change not to finish a long run with ringing ears!

Hi Mike, thanks for thd info.....I have found a company y in Leeds who can build one for me at what seems a reasonable price but they mention re mapping which I don't really understand....did you have to have yours re mapped?

If you have a spare £400-£500 odd quid, an exhaust shop will make you whatever you want. However loud, what tips you want, res delete.

Mine is a Frankenstein exhaust made from a 2.8 m52tu valved back box and resonator delete to the cat. If I had a spare £500, I’d have gone full custom. Was only £125 to get this custom middle pipe made and welded to the back box with a new exhaust hanger to hang from the subframe.

Even with just the res delete, theres a little extra noise. A little burbble. A little blub-blub-blub. A little blablabla. Nothing wild.

So they just supply straight bits and 45degree bend bits and you just slot it all together?
yeah, just work out whats needed, get swaged and slotted bends and pipe, either make your own flange for the cat end or cut flange off alltogether and get a male female pipe 60mm to 57mm and that will slide into the cat pipe, clamp up.

the only 2 real fiddly bits are moving around the 2 45 bends as one has to bend down slightly and the other back up, and the mounting hangers for it all.

I have never heard of a car needing to be remapped after a change of exhaust system! It sounds like a means of richening the mixture to stop popping back due an air leak, rather than findng the cause - curing the symptom rather than the cause!.

Even when my car had a stainless Eisenmann rear silencer it did not give any problems - apart from being too noisey.

Did you go for the 'sport' or 'race' version of the Eisenmann?

I ordered the Sport version, which promised OEM noise levels, but between ordering and despatch they decided to standardise on a compromise level. It sounded great for a short time in tunnels etc, but a long day's motorway run left my ears ringing. After many years of large diesel engine noise I decided that my hearing had been sufficiently damaged, and went for a custom quieter syatem, which has been fine.

only ever need to re map if you make the mixture leaner, which an open exhaust system can do. But you would need to have tubular headers, no cat, and straight through exhaust. The ecu and the maf will work it all out if its just a cat back system.
