BMW's answer is to replace the entire handle mechanism to get chrome on the main part of the handle - for a massive price!

I fitted chrome covers for an E36, which look really good. They are readily available from go-faster goodie type shops.

The lifter cover is secured with double-sided tape, which is fine, but I was not impressed by the idea of using it for the main piece, and used black silcone rubber. After about twenty years I have had no trouble.

The E36 has locks on both sides, so I fitted 19 mm badges into the holes, which are easy to remove if the central locking ever gives problems, and also keep grit out of the locks..

I fitted some chrome plated, stainless steel handle covers on my 2000 Z3 which I sourced from eBay, bought from a seller in Germany. They came supplied with a thin 3M doubled sided adhesive tape which allowed very close contact and never showed any sign of losing adhesion. The couple who bought my car still have it, with the same handles.

Small areas of chrome such as door handles always look tasteful, as do my Z8 chromed and heated washer nozzles - but I do not like slip-on chrome grilles, preferring body colour. I did however like the stainless mesh grilles which used to be available from Germany. I also used a bright silver paint on the meshes of my side gills, which (I think) look better than the original black. One can, however, have too much of a good thing - at the Swiss Z3 treffen I once saw a Z3 with chromed mirrors, but it looked like a sign of enthusiasm over good taste!

Don't like chrome at all personally, looks bling to me. Each to their own of course.
