So looking up prices for an ABS sensor for MK1 2.8 (has no DSC, only ASC which acts on the rear wheels) and to my surprise a Bosch part is under £30??
https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/162607096502 from Opie oils too so not a fake (!)

I believe this is what I need, item 7: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CH32-EUR-01-1998-Z3-BMW-Z3_28&diagId=31_0418

I'm just used to sensor prices being at least 3 figures so pleasantly surprised (or am I looking at the wrong thing and my hopes of a wallet friendly fix will be shattered!)

On another note need a crank sensor for a 2.8 VR6 and a genuine Bosch item is under £40 for that too. The Z3 one was more like a hundred and something if I recall correct (could have been cam sensor, was a while back but it was expensive).

I would be a little careful about presuming that's the OEM part.

The original part was VDO. Siemens acquired VDO during the Z3 production run and sold them on 10 years ago to Continental.

Bosch are clearly part of the same group as Siemens. And there's no doubt a Bosch part is likely to be a lot better than an unbranded part.

But who the OEM supplier is now/how it's labelled I'm not sure. Bosch, Siemens, VDO, Continental, AN Other?

I would very likely buy this part myself. So I'm not knocking it and it's a great find. But I would be interested to know who the OEM supplier is now.

I suspect the OEM (if you call them that but I mean current supplier to BMW) is now ATE.

I put a Delphi on the front of mine recently. But would certainly have used this Bosch part in preference for the sake of another £10. That said Delphi seem to have a decent enough reputation.

The rears are much more expensive. I threw caution to the wind there and fitted unbranded. Known quality was just too expensive for the rear. So far so good. If it fails after 12 months I'll take it on the chin and pay for a proper one next time.

ATE is also owned by Continental AG so who knows who supplies what nowadays.

@pgunter - is this the bit you got cheap from an E46, or was that the yaw sensor?
Yes it was and other bits too that were used on the E46. As well as Merc's and other cars that used the ATE system. Just because it's on a Z3 does not mean that's the only car it was fitted too.

Interesting. If anyone comes across a recently supplied BMW part I'd be interested to know what's stamped on there. And I'll ask in the dealership next time I'm in.

I bought a pair of front sensors from a German ebay seller, complete with 3yr warranty for around £25 delivered. Haven't had any problems
