Quick question about the exhaust on my z3 3.0i I think it's a standard backbox with one of those vacuum things that open it up etc.

No idea to be honest but I do notice that the whole tone and burble is far nicer from cold than when warmed up. So how or is there a way if keeping the exhaust note and character in the cold engine state?

If that makes any senses at all to anyone :)

On the Z4 there is a thing called "the golf tee mod", where you disconnect the vacuum hose from the flap in one of the tail pipes and put a golf tee in the hose (to stop it getting blocked with crud). Don't know if the 'flap' is the same arrangement on the Z3 (I have cut the end off my exhaust and don't remember seeing anything).

Although, warm or cold, the 3 litre M54 sounds a lot better than most BMWs, especially modern ones!

I did just read of similar on 328 and one person simply unplugged the electric to a solenoid (to retain the integrity of the vacuum) living in the boot, would this be similar on a z3 anyone?

As far as I'm aware the exhaust flap was only fitted to the facelift 2.0 & 2.8, in the UK at least.

I have heard of it and seen it in the manuals, however my 1998 2.8 did not have it either.

Have seen it on facelift 2.8, my 3.0 doesn’t have it

So the exhaust note/character could just be that different between cold engine and and warm?

Yes ..my 3.0l sounds awesome when you first start it..it calms down once it is warm

My late model Prefacelift has this, and the flap is jammed opened.
I do have the twin Vanos engine as well, so one of the last pre facelifts built

Forgot it was on the double vanos pre-facelift 2.8 as well.

Disconnected mine when I did the M54 manifold conversion and took the air pump off at the same time.
