Well, after deciding to take the ZGT rebody plunge and selling my 2016 Jag F-Pace (which had p!$$ed me off royally with needing not only a new engine but a month later a new turbo and DPF) I finally purchased a fairly crusty 2002 3.0i for £2.5k which had been SORN'd and left standing outside for a year and a half. It's cost another £1.5k to get running, serviced and MOT'd but I have now paid the deposit on a ZGT Tribute coupe which will be completed by Classiccoachworks in Basingstoke.

I wanted the end result to be as liveable with as possible so I wanted an Auto, 3.0 with air con and cruise control. Well it didn't have cruise but I've managed to fit it which was a remarkably easy upgrade with a switch and interface from the USA.

After I got it home and had a proper look over, I realise it was crustier than I thought and, in retrospect, probably paid over the odds. Buy in haste repent at leisure, I guess.

I am a little worried about the spot welds as it seems that many, if not most, I can see under the bonnet seem to show rust bubbling through. I've attacked many that I can get to with a Dremel grinder and painted with rust killer then satin Hammerite but I can't hope to get all of them which worries me as I have read about the spot welds in the boot giving way eventually, especially with the larger engines.

Also there's no underbody cover which means there's much rust underneath and the underseal is starting to peel and show rusty edges, though the sills were really bad at the front but I think I managed to get to these with the grinder, rust killer and Hammerite before it's managed to get structurally unsound.

Anyhow, it is what it is and as, when finished, it will become my daily driver for the remainder of my driving years I will have to suck it up and get on with it! At least I've saved it from the possible breakers and hopefully I'll be able to provide some entertainment along the way😁

And this is what I hope it'll look like when finished

May well be worth removing the outer sills and cleaning treating the inner (structural parts) of the sills before doing the body kit. I would think it would be a much easier proposition before anything else done. Keep us posted with pictures and progress please.

Like the Mk1/2 Spitfire in the garage. My first sportscar was a Spitfire 4 (Mk 1) that I bought for £90; likely worth a bit more now!!

+1 from me. I stripped off the rusty outer sills on mine followed by Bilthamber GE-OX, zinc-based primer, matt black rattle can and Waxoyl on the inners before the grp sills went on.

The outer sills will be removed as they are no longer needed with the rebody so the inners will then be treated. I fully intend to update the thread with progress👍

Are you doing the work yourself ? if so where are you doing it, this has always been my major issue having to work outside considering the job you're taking on it's worth considering.
:)
No I won't be doing the work myself as I don't have the space to do it, as you can see the garage is already occupied. Classiccoachworks in Basingstoke will be doing the work for me

It's a 1965 Spitfire4 mk2 and yes a bit more expensive now; I wouldn't let it go for anything less than £14k (which I may have to do, to fund the rebody work!)

Would be money well spent, especially if it’s going into your motoring swansong.

I can supply chrome wire wheels. hubs and spinners designed for the Z3 if you need a seat. Tubeless of course and you can still use the existing space saver tyre as well if you want.

How much would you charge for them?

Took mine off and found a whole lot of nasty underneath - trying to get a price for getting the welding done at the moment - those outer sills can cover a lot.

Set of 4 wheels, hubs and triple eared spinners are £1650 but can offer £100 discount to forum members.
As fitted to my 259swb in my avatar.]They use a peg lock design, not splines so will take a lot more power.
The hubs are held on with the original BMW wheel bolts so the hub can be removed at the side of the road in case of a puncture and the original space saver wheel fitted.

Your project should go quite well, as it has all been done before and all the problems should have been overcome. Trust me, if you want to drive the car, you really need to do what you've done - with my car, everything has to be designed from scratch. I'm almost at the point where I don't need a broom handle to hold the bonnet open 🤪

Z3 2.2 Kobra rebody (see pic)
Good luck with the build. Looking forward to seeing how it develops from one to another car.

I drove my Kobra yesterday and it was first time since early December. I’d forgotten how the senses are hit in one of these compared to my people carrier. Great fun and it gets lots of people stopping and staring. They never know what it is 😀

When the time comes I'd be interested in purchasing the original wheels off your Z3 if we can come to a deal and also some of the other parts off your donor car that will end up surplus to your project.feel free to pm me

Here is a link to my eBay listing with photos. The wheels were designed to fit the Tribute 250swb and the DNA 250 California. I can also supply parts for the DNA California, interiors trim to a full kit.
