I agree with you, but as I have found a few things that would indicate its had numpties working on it, when I find something that looks wrong, I need to get to the bottom of it.
It may be that there was an idler was fitted at some stage and has just been left off????
@Mazza, just been out changing spark plugs and see my M44 does indeed have an idler pully adjacent to the alternator. Have amended an earlier post. Your "numpties" might well have been at work in the past.

This will be off to the paint shop in the morning with the other bits, and then the van can go back.

@Ianmc , the pulley arrived by courier last night and it was the Idler one I ordered. (In error ) But no problem, ordered the spacer, cut down a new M10 x 60 bolt to 45mm , and ran a tap through the casting to clean the thread and next week I will have it all fitted  As it should have been !!

Need a beer now!!!

@Ianmc , just out of curiosity....if you get a couple of minutes, can you have a look at the label on your alternator and see what the rating details say.
It is on the back and is fairly easy to see.

It's a BMW alternator (likely original) with a big 90 (nine zero), Can't see the full part number due to location. Assume its 90 amp (have aircon)?

Thanks for having a look Ian.
That is the same one as mine, the label will say its rated 50- 90 amp. But that is funny as you have the idler pulley but mine doesn’t. I don’t have air con though?

If it had previously been fitted I would have thought the threads would tell?

Tony.

Hi Ian, to be honest not easy to tell. I had to Run a tap down the thread as the hole was full of crap, and didnt want to force a bolt in to it.
Part number on the box same as part number listed on RealOem ( part number 6)
It also came with part number 8, the cap.

Part number 5 on order. ( not arrived yet)

Spacer Bush arrived today ( stamped with BMW part number) and only £4.00 .
So these are all the bits for the idler pulley.

The picture of the original bolt has a integral washer ( Fillister Head), but the description just says Hex Bolt , so I have just used a standard bolt ( or Hex Head set screw, if perdantic) With an M10 washer.
All fits nicely together and will be greased both sides before final installation.

Thought I better screw it in just to check the alignment and all ok.

Now to get all the new parts bolted back on to the front of the engine, lift the front of the car, and fill and bleed the system. ...............When I say now......I mean tomorrow:whistle:

Is the "idler pulley" made the same as the "tensioner pully"? Look to be so from the photos.

Hi Ian,
They are different ( on my car at least), the idler gear has a 10mm hole while the tensioner is 17mm.
The tensioner itself, has a small boss that fits inside the pulley, with a plate and bolt that fixes it.

Both pulleys are 70mm dia, but there is about 1mm difference in thickness (tensioner 27mm, idler 26mm)

Nice sunny day, so got a bit done.....

New Waterpump, new idler gear and plastic stuff fitted . Also fitted the air box and new inlet hose before I realised I would be able to reconnect the headlights so removed them again.....and before I took any pictures so you wouldn’t realise what a numpty I am !! =))
3DA2FDD9-90E9-4BE6-9F7E-85B725DA88FE.jpeg

Jacked up the front of the car and slowly filled the system ( as per the manual )

1257F9EA-0745-4632-BECA-2076A97266F7.jpeg

And after bleeding the system and letting it cool down the level was just under the final level.

Couldn’t see any leaks, so happy that it will just need topping up a bit.

Obviously it needed a run, but being SORN and no insurance couldn’t take it too far........
312B2470-C7CD-45D3-B3AA-6B7E01090149.jpeg

And thats as far as it was taken, forwards and backwards about 4 times =)) But no water dropped on the driveway!!!
One thing I did find today was the earth wire crimp that fixes to the bonnet was only attached by about 5 strands of wire
So cut It off, stripped the insulation and recrimped and also soldered the joint to ensure good contact.

Cheaper option than buying a new lead.
I also recycled the thread protector that was on the new new waterpump .....it fits really snuggly on the front towing eye and will stop all the crap getting into the thread:)

Just need one for the back now !!!

Not much I can do until the panels have all been sprayed and collected. Due end of next week.

Just speed read this so sorry if I am wrong, but why are you adding the extra pulley, from what I have read it is to take up the tension when the extra load is added to the alternator when the aircon is activated, if you don't have AC then surely you don't need it and it just adds another part to be maintained
