Not personally but know what you mean Tony
Had a 65 plate Kangoo fleet van in yesterday we need to do a tablet tyre survey on vehicles measured nearside front at
0 : 0 : 1.6mm
Never ceases to amaze me that people drive about in potential deathtraps and think nothing of it .

The thing is people don't check their cars before driving, that tyre probably looked OK from a distance with the car on the ground and the wheels straight. People don't look any closer than that.

You're right there Mike. This is on a rear wheel though and the problem is people simply don't look under their cars as they walk up to it.
At least with front wheels you can turn the wheels, but again people just don't.

Tony.

I am now long retired but a year before I gave up one of my engineers got stopped for speeding on the motorway, and police found three tyres very illegal. They gave the transport manager a grilling ,but as luck had it most of the company staff were involved in a meeting a few days later. He arranged for ats to come and check all vehicles, and they found an unbelievable number of tyres needing changing, including one director who had canvas showing on two front tyres on his 735 ( his justification was they were on back order) The culprits included two fitter vans.

The company procedure was if any driver thought tyres looked like needed changing , go into any ats depot, they would check and renew as required. They did not require any permission.

No one needed to put hand in pocket , just get them changed.

We then introduced a system of drivers signing a check sheet each week, don't know if it worked but cleared the transport manager

So it does not surprise me all.

Thought Lee had been out for a spin on those =))

Sad thing is that most people simply don’t care. Driving them down to the canvass is cheaper - until that is, you get points or a hospital bed or a box.

Can people wear tyres down that much in 12 months (unless there is another fault)?
How many miles had it done since the last MoT?

I've seen tyres destroyed in 12 weeks never mind 12 months sometimes.
The unfortunate thing is in this country we are not that big on tyres being an important safety issue the amount of tyres like that and worse I see ( and I'm sure Tony does also ) is ridiculous sometimes.
I was going to put this on another thread but stick it in here ( hope you don't mind Tony)
Had a guy in this morning 57 plate Toyota Avensis said wasn't driving right put it up on the air and this was what was underneath

The rear arm assembly snapped in two dealer part £280 +vat just to buy so showed the guy and gave him a price and he went no an we took off ramp and then he drove away again ( back wheel still at a stupid angle ) .
Got to say it's for people like that that I would like to have powers to issue a prohibition and stop a car like that that is a danger to himself and others being on the road .

Cor blimey @Stevo7682 That thing looks like it needs to be scrapped not fixed. How did it pass the last MOT with that level of corrosion on the way? And yes, if the power exists at the time of the MOT to take a car off the road then it should exist at all times. And does if the Police saw that.

I have more sympathy with the tyres. My 3 Series is lease and on maintenance including tyres. I still managed to let it get down to the cords. The trouble is with the rear tyres where it's more difficult to check the inside edge without crawling around on the ground.

3 points on your license for each illegal tyre has been the penalty for many years, needs enforcing.
