Help!! 1.9i 2001 Z3. I removed battery to charge it and since putting it back in the windows and central locking don’t work. Everything else works. Had two people look at it and it’s not registering their diagnostics. Driving me crazy now!!

Not sure about windows apart from checking the obvious fuses, The power steering is engine driven and no electrics to it at all so that is a red herring.

2001 is one of those years where sometimes diagnostics work, sometimes not. It depends on the model and whether BMW thought it worthwhile adding it.

Your car probably doesn't have body diagnostics, as the Z3 was going out of production, whereas an E46 of the same age does have diagnostics.

I can't help much with the power steering, as I can't see what that has to do with the battery, but here's the wiring diagram for a 2000 RHD car (http://www.porterbility.co.uk/Files/PDF/e36z3_00_AG.pdf).

The power windows are on pages 5133.0-00 and 5133.0-01

Well, this is an interesting one.

The Z3 has mechanical power steering. Had a quick look through the wiring diagrams and could not see any electrical connections. Happy to be proven wrong on this one. Your power steering problems have nothing to do with the battery change.

The windows are controlled by the General Module 4 (ZKE4). It may have trouble codes stored, plus you can check the operation of the windows through this module.

To read the trouble codes and talk to the ZKE4, you need to connect to the 20 pin port under the bonnet/hood and use a scanner with BMW software.

If the people you have taken your car to can't communicate with the car, then there may be other problems. Firstly, get them to see if they can communicate with the engine computer (DME). The DME talks OBD2 and any scanner can talk to it. They can use either the 20 pin port under the bonnet/hood or the OBD2 port under the steering wheel. For the OBD2 port to work, the lid has to be in place on the 20 pin port. If they can talk to the DME, then it comes down to the scanner that they are using to try and talk to the ZKE4.

Central Locking is also controlled by the ZKE4. You need to read the ZKE4 trouble codes.

I take it that you have looked at the fuses and that they are all good?
