Hi all,

After some advise re rear lights and if they will split apart to clean?
Asking as on latest MOT had these advisories. Car is a Z3 2002 clear lights

Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
  • Nearside Rear reflector defective or damaged by up to 50% of the reflecting surface (4.8.1 (a) (i))
  • Offside Rear reflector defective or damaged by up to 50% of the reflecting surface (4.8.1 (a) (i)
Not damaged but gone black inside.
Is it worth splitting them to clean, or put in a bucket of soapy water or blast with an airline or bite the bullet and buy a set of lamps?

Many thanks Keith

I would be very skeptical of separating the lens of any assembly like a headlight or taillight to clean them. I have done instead soaked such assemblies in a bucket as you mention and used a variety of small brushes to get at the various areas in the past.
I also have an old "water-pick" that I use to direct soapy water in a variety of ways when an area cant be reached by conventional brushes.

The fronts split using a hotair gun or putting them in the oven to melt the butyl in order to fit angel eyyes - I am guessing the same could be done with the rears but I havent looked at a rear cluster for ages so cant remember.

If they passed the MOT and they still work to the naked eye I would potentially ignore it - failing that spursfaninacoupe probably has loads
