Wide body

This should be of some help Rob :-

Never thought I'd be happy that I'm a small body... :)

My wife tells me I've become a widebody!

Someone could also have created their own wide body 1.9.

So the facelift is not actually a "wide body", is that correct?

Good question there SV8… the facelift always looks a bit thin when compared to 6cyl pre f/l…hope someone can put the subject to rest for us … cheers

I think the face lift is the same width as the early "widebody 2.8". However the styling does not give that impression. The distance from the outside edge of the new styled rear light to the wheel arch and the raised rear wheel arches give the impression it is narrower.
I love the look of the early 2.8 from the rear.

The facelift 'raised haunches' give a styling nod to the old 507. What a beauty!

The pre facelift 2.8 along with the Z3M roadster has a more flared appearance as indicated by Hard Top's photos towards the top of this thread.

My 2.8 showing off its bulging arches, its the one I wanted. Used to have a Z3M 20 years ago (anyone remember the mad cow run through the New Forrest we did and after a meal ended up at Beaulieu?)

I find RTFM useful in situations where memories fade:

Taken from the Owners Manual technical data for my 1998 2.8 standard car (not designated wide body [evidently a woke interweb phrase] at order and build).

BMW claimed that the later rear wings gave the Z3 a 'Muscular and thrusting' appearance . . . it sounds like a description of a male hamster on heat!

I've always thought that the fender bulges on the facelift model made it look muscular. I've always been a fan of cars with bulging fenders....man that sounds creepy.

There is one up for sale over here at the moment :-

BMW Z3 1.9i Roadster wide body € 8.900,-

Yes, but that’s normal, all facelift rear ends are the same. I guess the term wide body in the advert listing will offend the owners of pre facelift 2.8’s. You can however take a pre facelift narrow body and make it into a wide body by changing the wings and bumper. You can also install the 6cylinder style front bumper to a 4cylinder car to confuse people.

So a question about face lift and pre face lift.
Could you fit a set of wide body wings. Boot lid and rear lights on a face lift model.
Would a bumper be required?
