Which spring compressors for the front of a Z3?

Hi

I have to replace the front struts on my 2.8L Z3. One is leaking oil badly. M-Sport suspension.

The last time I attempted this job, I tried several different sets of spring compressors to compress the spring, but failed. Could not compress the spring enough.

For those who have successfully done the job, do you have any photos of spring compressors that you have used?

Unless you have a floor mounted compressor I would get the struts off and take them to your local friendly garage and pay them to swap everything over. Using the little ones is a bit like cleaning a loaded 12 bore, you'd probably be OK ...........but.

I ran into the same problem with my Z3 a while back. I borrowed a heavy-duty spring compressor from a local tool rental shop, and it made a huge difference. The ones with a solid frame and multiple hooks are definitely worth it. Also, don't forget to use a torque wrench when reassembling everything. If you need a specific recommendation, I can dig up the exact model I used.

Dismantling original, compressors grabbed bottom three coils on one side, and top three coils on opposing. Ratchet straps for added safety!

Building up one of the new shocks, one compressor is grabbing bottom three coils and other one is grabbing all four.

Building up the other new one, had use of a pals compressors as well here, so four plus two ratchet straps. Can’t quite make out what they’re grabbing, but you get the gist.

I recall having to experiment with where the compressors went to be able to grab all the coils and avoid them hitting the top plate.

A special tool is needed to tighten an Allen bolt inside the top nut, which can be made by hacking up a cheapo socket

I've done this job many times on different cars and I ALWAYS use 2 pairs of clamps. It's not a difficult job but can be jaunting if you are a nervous type

Done 3 springs with it up to now, none of them mine. Worth it's weight in gold.

I used these spring compressors. A nice small form factor that allowed for all 4 to be on the spring and get it compressed. They worked well.
