Looks like I am going to have to enter the modern world and invest in some sort of scanner. I would like the option to access Amanda's 1999 pre facelift Z3 and my 2010 X5.

Option to look at other cars would be nice as my daughter is looking for a car as well.

Any thoughts please? I have an old laptop so could go down that route but having never used a car scanner before I am open to advice.

I am used to using hand held terminals and laptops at work.

Any thought please, I'd rather buy the right on first time even if it costs a bit more.

For my 1999 Z3M I use a Creator C310+ with a 20-pin adaptor. Works great, does all major bits including reading/resetting codes and ABS/airbag lights. Works with most BMWs, and only costs around £55.

For VAG cars, I have an OBDEleven bluetooth dongle which is also great.

I-carsoft BMMv2.
does everything (and for modern cars-abs bleed-battery registration-throttle and steering position etc).
used it no prob at both my bmws and the range rover.
