Which fuel cap should I have?

In an effort to keep my 2001, 2.2i Auto as original as possible I am looking for confirmation of the correct Oem fuel cap which would have been specified.

I believe I have narrowed it down between the following two choices, uncertain if they represent the period of manufacture or for instance it is specific to say engine size.

BMW part 16111184664 which has a tether but also text printed either side of finger grip seem to cost approx £15.

or

BMW part 16116756771 also with tether but no printed text and sell for approx £28.

Presumably both of these should come with a suitable sealing o ring.

As always any advice much appreciated.

That's what's in mine. Who knew there was a choice? According to realoem both types are fitted to 2.2s, best you try your VIN in there and see what it says. Realoem isn't always right, but it'll do.

I bought this for my 2002 Z3 a few weeks ago. I would call it a fuel cap tether, but BMW call it a Holding Strap. Part number 16116754637. I know you can get aftermarket ones, or not have one at all - but I wanted an OEM one!
BMW only seem to offer this as part for the Z3 as part of the complete fuel cap assembly, for which they wanted a cool £45! My cap is the same as that shown in the above post #2 (with the BMW logos on).
I couldn't find the strap individually linked to the Z3 on any parts database, but did find it assigned to other models.
It's identical in every respect to my broken one, and cost £6.50 incl. postage.
Only a small item and hope the info is useful, but it also begs the question of how many more Zed parts may be hiding in plain sight on the BMW parts database.

I’ve been looking for one of those for ages, although my cap is a bit different. That part appears to be used on almost all models, but frustratingly showing as not compatible with my Z3.
The whole filler cap assembly seems to fit lots of the same models including all Z3’s!
I’m going to try the holding strap too.

Looks like the end connection onto your cap pushes in 'end on' whereas mine is 'side on' - it might still fit though. Here's hoping!!

Didn’t realise early Z3’s had such old school caps. I’ve not had a locking cap since my first car in the early 90’s. Brings back memories of filler caps with a bunch of keys attached, resting on top of a petrol pump.

Part of the charm with early cars I guess. Also no ASC/DSC, powered roof or other driver aids (apart from ABS which I live with!). Less to go wrong as the car ages an added bonus.
By the way, my first few cars had no fuel lock at all; became a must have accessory during the 1973 fuel crisis.

Yes, back in the day when a heater was an optional extra - if you were lucky! - that's what I'm told anyway........

My first van had neither a passenger seat, or a (working) heater. Spare wheel was where the passenger seat would be. It didn't have brakes to speak of either. Ex-Post Office Bedford HA110 (Viva based). I loved it!

It taught me how to drive, I know that!

Nice and tidy now! no wasted money as at least you have a nice new fuel cap as well. Something I will have to replace eventually I guess, but as things are, I'll get another tether attached to it!!................
