I want something other than DVLA and would love to have some peace of mind, where there are no adverts popping up on my face.

Suggestions are welcome.

Probably depends on what you want to check , but for tax and mot history checks I just use the dvla.guv.uk site no adverts

I'm not sure you'll get what you want for free. The data you want is a valuable way of organisations making money.

I use mycarcheck.com and it will tell me if written off, stolen, imported, # previous owners, plate changes etc. The basic check is £2 that will tell you all of that. A comprehensive check with outstanding finance and £30k indememnity against loss from using their data is £10.

A false economy to skimp if you are investing potentially thousands into a car purchase. Get everything checked and accept the minimal cost.

Its a cheap option for peace of mind, little or no value in any free options

I presume you are buying privately. Spend the money - it's an insurance policy. There are no shortcuts.

If it's a commercial purchase then check that the dealer has done all the checks and get confirmation in writing as to which ones they have done. To be honest, I don't know what they are obliged to do from a legal minimum, if anything (Anyone know?). If they haven't done all those you need then tell them anything you pay for comes off the purchase price. If they won't then walk away.

Free car checks are a waste of time.

I bought a car privately for my son and never even thought on doing a check. Fortunately a colleague asked if I had checked it’s history and when I did, I found it had been written off. It appeared, when challenged, that the owner didn’t know as he was gutted and gave me my deposit back no problem. I learnt a lesson when buying privately.

I used HPI muticheck £30 for 3 checks over 2 years.
