I really don't get my head around Ant wanting to do this show. I like Wheeler Dealers and I like Ant. I've seen the video Ant did explaining why he wanted to do it (grandfather of restoration shows, grew up watching etc) but it feels like a sideways move at best.

Ant is one of those horrendously nice and clever people who manages to charm male and females at the same time. I would have thought his next move could have been something much bigger and mainstream. I guess it just makes him even nicer that he's gone and done something close to his heart rather than for the career.

And WD could have brought through someone new and made the next Ed China rather than bought him off the shelf.

Anyway, I shall be tuning in if I can pick it up from somewhere. Just a shame about that tw*t Mike Brewer but I guess it wouldn't be quite the same without him.

The answer to that is money
I would think he could make much bigger money than that with something more mainstream. I struggle to believe he doesn't get more high profile offers than that. Might well be wrong though.

I'm afraid the same mistake is being made here as the BBC made with Top Gear.:(

I happened to meet Ed a few weeks ago. He is a smart, genuine chap and a great loss to WD IMO.

cant get much more mainstream than Wheeler Dealers?

217 territories and over 200 millions viewers

only thing that would be bigger is top gear or grand tour, but neither of those shows need a car restorer

i think he's made a very savvy move

I didn't mean restoration programmes. He's more than capable of doing some sort of other regular support slot on top gear/grand tour.

And if he felt so inclined I would suggest he's perfectly capable of moving over into wider activity based broadcasting like Guy Martin has or edutainment stuff like James May's done with Toy Stories and Richard Hammond's done with Brainiac and Blast Lab.

I'm no Ant fan-boy. But I just get soooo depressed with the plethora of irritating and talentless tw*ts who pop up presenting on British TV these days. I'd be perfectly happy to see Ant on TV more often and doing other stuff.

So that was my point. I'm really struggling to believe he hasn't been offered other stuff. And if he's turned it down in favour of doing what's closest to his heart with WD then good for him.

From the same company as wheeler dealers is the salvage hunters been down helping them get a merc back together ready for filming. All really staged though.

When James May did the Scalextric Toy Stories they did a section in the home of someone I know looking at his Scalextric collection. In order to make him look as big a nerd as possible they asked him, to ask James May to remove his shoes when he came in the house so he didn't make his carpet dirty! All staged. Though clearly us Scalextric collectors are all nerds anyway before anyone says it...

I met Ed at Goodwood the other day he said he'll be making a new program and told me to watch his youtube channel for details
You were lucky to meet him Steve,is he taller than me ?
I remember when he did up an old Lotus Elan I think it was, when he drove it with the roof down, his head was above the screen and he wore some goggles to protect his eyes =)).

It just won't be the same without Ed. Who can forget the episode when they restored a Triumph Spitfire where on the final test drive Ed's head was fully above the windscreen and he needed to wear flying goggles - it looked so comical =))
