I've been looking at some style 40 wheels for my 3.0 Z3. I'm presuming they will fit, but the rear offset does look a bit aggressive. How willl they fit/look or are they best left to the M?

The rears could be a bit of an issue your standard rim offset is et41 front and rear.
The style 40 front is OK rear a completely different thing

Thanks Stephen. You have confirmed what I thought, I was hoping someone would say, yeah no problem!. I did see that website, I just wasn't sure how they would work and couldn't find any specific threads. My current wheels are what I was looking for when buying the car, but Ishame as I do like a deep dish...

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty you can replace the hub for a 2.5 Z4 equivalent this is 20mm shorter to tuck in those wheels.

To add my tuppence-worth, I use 2 measurements as my limits on wheel fitment and comparing using www.willtheyfit.com

Front: 17X8J ET35 - This is as far as you can go without pretruding from wheel arch.

REAR: 18X9.5J ET 33- This is based on a forum members car who runs this setup and is almost flush as possible. Might squeeze another 5mm out but not much.

As @Lee has mentioned, the Z4 hub can be installed to pull the wheel into the well by 20mm or so. With this mod you can also put vented brakes on the rear. 292mm discs with 'si' 2.5 brake calipers. The parking brake shoe might need to be swapped over for a z4 item which is 5mm slimmer.

Any wheel ideas, pm me as I've probably been down the rabbit hole already. 🙈

Hello Eddie-S,

Some great helpful advice from Stephen, Lee and Schoolblitz, changing hubs etc with the additional costs, work and time not sure I could be bothered, there are some lovely wheels out there for direct replacement.

What wheels do you have and what are you looking for?

You can run 4 fronts on the car if you like the wheels, and if you can find them other owners have done this but, you still wont get that nice dished rear 🤷‍♂️

Thanks folks. It's the dish on the rears that makes the wheels. Only looking at BMW wheels and there's no others that I like other than what is on the car already. So I'll stick with them. Probably just had too much time in my hands and started looking at things I don't need. My favourite hobby!

If there was ever a time to do the rear end refurb + mod, it's probably now as z4s and their parts are very good value for money.

X2 hubs £90
X2 discs £20 and up
X2 brake calipers - £60 with carriers
X2 carriers.
X1 parking shoe kit. £20
X2 wheel Bearings £20

Roughly...

17s are very limited not only the small selection of 120x5 wheels that fit on the front but also tyres. Getting anything wider than a 255/40/17 in the European market is tough.

However, Rondell 58s were/are on my radar for wheels. Would look the dogs b*******s on a Z3 IMHO. 17X8 ET35 (how convenient) and 10x7 ET15.

BBS RK: 17x8 ET35 (also very convenient) and 17x10 et24 in the rear.

Both absolutely 'dishlicious' but I think both would need the hub mod.

Then there is 18s...

Your really know your stuff! Not so keen on the Rondell's but the BBS's look very nice. However, still far too much faff for a set wheels, for me anyway.

Thanks. There is a set on the Bayern website that look very nice and with good offset. Will look into those a bit more to see what the dish looks like on 17's 👍

Those M style wheels he has are an Italian copy, so no offset issues. They are so pretty.

Looks like I'll be on the hunt for the Italian M style 40 wheels. Dino D has certainly gone to town.
