Car is currently on ramps and have started cleaning underbody rust from arms etc. Quick question what is the go to next step. Is there a primer type covering to paint on then a top layer? What do people use for this please?

I've been giving my wifes E36 a freshen up underneath. Luckily I have access to a small blasting cabinet. I have blasted what I can, primered with etch primer and then painted with Por15.

I'd better not say I also used a two post lift as well....

I did the front suspension of my Z3 in my garage without such luxuries. I plan on doing the rear at some point. But if you can, spend the time to unbolt what you can and perhaps use an angle grinder and wire wheel on them to get the flaky paint and rust off. When you put it back together, use new bushes, springs and even nuts and bolts. (look for Autobolts.co.uk)

haha.

Im just doing a few bits, Not looking at suspension etc as to get it right will be bigger job and I will do it when parts need changing- for now little steps. First time I've ever put a car on ramps and been under it myself so would just like to do a few bits first.

You could use a deox gel that eats off the rust/ or grind off 95% of it. Then hydrate 80 to convert any left in the pitted areas. Then some mastic paint?

BE hard to do arms etc whilst on the car though.

@handsomejackuk uses red oxide followed by black Smoothright as a topcoat having treated any rust with Krust rust convertor. Seems to get a decent finish from what I have seen on his cars. I just needed to pressure wash the underside of the Z4 then direct paint the underpinnings with black Smoothright, seems to be lasting well last time I looked. I did take the wing liners out before pressure washing, sprayed Clear Waxoyle in the arches before putting them back in.

just been looking at bilt hamber products- hydrate 80/deox and elextrox.
Amazing as it looks like people have their favourites and seems a bit like marmite as others dont like them.. Have confused myself and probably researching too much for what it is I actually want to do

Plus one for Bilt Hamber, all their products are top notch, if slightly pricey.

I remove loose stuff with polycarbide attachments on my angle grinder and drill. Then use Bilt Hamber Deox to get back to bare metal, followed by epoxy primer which is brushed as I don't have a compressor, and then colour and lacquer coats from rattle cans. Epoxy primer is apparently non-porous and forms a physical barrier to water and oxygen (well, that's what I read...) It's also cheap, so offsets the pricey BH stuff a bit haha

One of my sills before, after BH Deox gel, after epoxy (and seam sealer), and after colour/lacquer. This was done three years ago and looks the same now, so holding up fine.

Lechlar 29107 epoxy primer from Express Paints in Portsmouth. You’ll need the epoxy, and the specific hardener and thinner. And a proper mask.!

I believe the Rustbuster mastic linked above is basically epoxy primer but already pre-mixed, so that’s prob the better option for you, especially if you’re only doin lil bits

Mixing it yourself works out cheaper tho if you’re doing big areas (like chassis sills etc)

It's all down to the prep at the end of the day.

I didn't use the gel (you gotta leave it on for a while whilst it works) But I Was impressed with the hydrate 80. I got a wire brush on the grinder for the backs of the outer cills, degreased tehm, dried them with airgun immediately and then painted that Hydrate 80 on. Been ina damp garage for 1 year with just that on. STill not re rusted whatsoever. Seems to neutralise any left and seal it off. Same with the front, rear wings on the bases, only hydrate 80 on them, not re-rusted at all. A £15 1ltr bottle will do a whole car too. The mastic paints are a rock hard paint so good against stone chips.

I went through same with looking at different things and you get put off by people not liking it. I imagine they are all good if the prep is followed and thorough.

If you just use normal primer it'll be rusty again in a year. Even Epoxy mastic paint on small items brackets I didn't use hydrate 80 on, have rust coming through again. Hence the reason why some people dont like some of the products - they probably didn't prep it well enough then blame the product for not working, so they don't like it or give a negative rating.
