I can certainly NOT recommend Garmin. I went for the top of the range NUVI unit and it's a pain in the backside. Went for this one as I have the ODB code reader module for it, which works well.

The route planning is usually good, but it doesn't tell you if it's diverting around traffic jams - so you have to follow it faithfully. A couple of times it's told me to come off at a different junction to what I've expected, and it's secretly rerouted because of traffic. I ignored the turning and got stuck. An onscreen warning would be nice.

Finally, the most useless feature is that it reboots randomly. Usually it does it when you are at a critical part of the route, and as it takes about 2 minutes for a full power on boot you miss turnings. It's not faulty, and Garmin have not been able to tell me why it does it.

They may be better now as my unit is 2 years old, but wouldn't buy another one from them. I should have stuck with TomTom...

Hi Jonco, I've had a TomTom One XL for about 6 years now and can thoroughly recommend it. We've used it in the UK and in Europe. I like the feature that gives you an ETA which is updated all the time. Don't think you can go wrong with a TomTom.;). The one you have linked to looks a good buy - I paid about £200 for mine:( but technology does move on...

+1 for Tom Tom, I have had both Garmin and Tom Tom. I have found with my Garmin that it does not have the same level of detail as the tom tom, I live slightly off the beaten track and the Garmin sat nav with the latest map updates does not show all the smallest roads and tracks. Like Gary my Garmin reboots just when I need it , it is a PITA.
