Just had to remove the battery to be charged (Grrrr!) and found this pipe underneath - any ideas what it is for and where it should be connected?

Release the gas from battery to outside the car. Until I changed the battery I never knew such an item existed
Cheers. So does the end plug into the battery somewhere?

Yes, there will be a hole about 5-6mm dia. near the top. The plastic elbow pushes into that hole. It vents any gas to the outside of the car.

Many thanks; I'll give that a go when the battery goes back in. First time I've seen one of these and it obviously defeated whoever fitted the battery in the first place

Not all batteries have a vent pipe hole, so if you can't find one don't make one.;)

The stock battery definitely had one. None of my replacements ever have. Don't know where the gas goes these days

Tony is spot on with his comment - don't make a hole if the battery does not have one.
The gas formed is hydrogen and is explosive hence the vent (to extract it from the confined boot space).
I guess most cars have a battery in the engine bay where any gas vented from the battery is heavily diluted with air currents entering via the radiator.

It'll be in the rear of the car, all to do with weight distribution. Most likely the O/S/R corner.

Tony.

ps. In my VW Touareg it was under the front passenger seat and a real b1tch to change.

Well, after a thoroughly good reconditoning and charging courtesy of a CTEK charger, battery refitted and car started for the first time this year

IMG_0218.JPG

The mystery (to me) breather pipe fitted having removed the blanking plug from the correct end of the battery (presume the original fitter of the battery didn't realise there was a hole at each end and one had a blanking plug, and so discarded the tube to the bottom of the batery well o_O)

Many thanks for the responses; it never ceases to amaze me how much knowledge there is out there and how readily it is shared on this forum 👍
