Had to lower the spare wheel carrier today and removed the black plastic cubby hole on right side of boot and found this pipe which wasn't connected to anything but looks like it should be? The bottom part exits under the car so it's obviously a drain but for what?

Battery acid overflow from the battery

Battery breather tube.

Agree with @t-tony . Original battery was liquid acid-lead type and needed to vent the hydrogen when it charged. These have mainly been replaced by sealed gel type batteries which do not need venting. I puzzled for several months before I found the answer.

Ahh thanks guys... that all makes sense now but l must admit l was baffled!! Replaced my battery today with an exide one and l don't think it requires the breather

A lot of batteries still use them, I would check yours to see if it needs it. I have fitted a Duracel battery.
