What does this mean?

The C110+ code scanner arrived this morning and these are the codes showing. At the moment the lights are out and the car is driving normally.

ABS (Antilock brake)

5E40 Steering Angle Implausible
5E24 Pressure sensors
5E4F Continuous control
5E3C Rotation Rate Signal
5E38 Rotation Rate Sensor

Can someone decipher these for me?

Sounds like at least some of the codes will be related to the sensors found under the carpet. I think I would start there. You may possibly find things are damp under there and have caused the error.

The other codes might just go away if the first fault is cleared. Otherwise it sounds like a separate steering angle sensor error and possibly an ABS/DSC error.

Thanks Rob, I will have a look under the carpets this afternoon. I will also take Tony’s advice, reset the codes and take a drive to see what happens.

Had the implausible steering error after changing my front suspensions arms. This had knocked the tracking out and put the steering wheel at 2 o'clock. I'm guessing the ECU didn't like it because the wheels and yaw sensors said the car was going straight but the steering wheel wasn't. Levelled and reset the sensor through INPA and was fine afterwards.

But if your steering wheel is actually straight I wouldn't worry too much about that one

When I got Rotation Rate Sensor fault I thought it must be a wheel sensor, but at Silverstone Brian very kindly hooked up INPA to my car and it was the Yaw Sensor under the carpet. I suppose the yaw sensor is trying to measure if the car is rotating round its axis, ie. spinning, hence the curious description. Anyway, I bought a refurbished one from an ebay seller for £145 and it has been fine since. I've also stopped the rain getting in and dried out the foam under the carpet (not an easy task - there were pints of water trapped in it). I now have a cut trapdoor in the carpet so I can inspect the sensors and make sure they aren't wet. The trapdoor is not noticeable as it is hidden by the front of the passenger seat and the over-mat.

If you have those codes and the ABS/Traction control light is not on I will be very surprised, does the light work when you press the button? I have seen already two occasions where the bulb was removed or tampered with to make it look like the system was OK.

Hi Mario, Thanks for your reply.
Yes the light does come on when pressed. I have had the car for a long time so am sure it has not been tampered with.
I have cleared the codes and will retest after driving for a while to see if they return. At the moment it all seems to be working normally.

Usually it's the the first one to come back which can then trigger other codes.

I would definitely check for damp under the carpets by removing the passenger seats, even if it looks dry on the surface you can easily have a couple of inches of water underneath - its water that normally kills the lateral and rotational acceleration sensors.

OK. Dumb question....
How do I remove the passenger seat? Never done it before!

two bolts hold the seat rails to the floor, move the seat fully forward remove the pair pf bolts holding down the rear, then move the seat fully back to get at the front pair of bolts holding the rail down. Once all 4 bolts are removed disconnect the battery before you do anything else. Once disconnected and you pause for a good 10 mins to ensure all electrickery has dissapated from the system tip the seat up and over to access the underseat wiring connectors. Disconnect then the seat will be removable from the car. DO NOT reattach the battery or start the car when the seat electrics are disconnected or you will set airbag codes that will require resetting. Same for drivers seat. lift the carpet from the door sill and prop it up to dry it out, you may have to squeeze the foam to get rid of excess water its holding.
Now is the time to see if you can put the undercarpet module inside a plastic bag and secure it with a cable tie just to prevent it getting a soaking should it happen again.

I think you can slide the seats forward enough to be able to push your hand in a slit in the carpet and have a feel if it’s wet. Try that first before unbolting stuff?
