My s***'s custom!
So, just drove back up to Derbyshire from Berkshire. There was a point where I drove at "some" miles per (long story but there was an Audi TT misbehaving....and a short time later there wasn't :ymdevil:)

On my return I discovered that my offside rear hub has pealed itself of its paint. What could generate this sort of heat in the hub and leave the caliper intact?

This was the first drive I've done since a local garage stripped and rebuilt all my calipers as one was sticking (not this one!)

Opinions?

Something heat related? Calliper sticking slightly or shoe sticking?

I would check the parking brake as the paint has come off the "drum" part.

According to the M.O.T. there's no such thing as a "handbrake" only a parking brake mate.:)

Thanks you your answers folks. My initial thoughts were sticking caliper by the paint on the caliper and surrounding the disc is sound. Parking brake is a distinct possibility as when the car was in to have the calipers sorted, I had a new handbrake lever supplied and fitted! I also noticed that upwards of 90mph (on private roads.....ahem...) I could feel a vibration similar to a wheel out out balance but not as severe. Could it be linked?

I agree with @t-tony as soon as I see the pic my initial thought was that the handbrake will be binding, if it was your caliper I don't think it would generate that sort of heat in the drum.

I noticed this on your rear offside drum when it was parked up at ZCARS, could have happened on the way down if you noticed anything then and not the way back.
I noticed a smell of hot paint when I arrived but didn't look as got greeted by Stacey with a customary hug and forgot all about it. I noticed a vibration over 90mph that felt like a very slight wheel balance issue. I think those suggesting a parking brake issue may be on the money as I had a new one fitted before tucking the car away for winter. This was the first trip out since having it done.

So, let me get this straight..

You hurried to get there so Stacey could give you a hug, you got so hot you started smoking and your paint peeled off.

Glad we got that sorted =))

Hope its not the bearing. I guess you would have heard that if it was complaining. I'd bet the parking brake binding a little.
