A bloomin puncture!! Last time I had one was in me pushbike as a spotty faced teenager. Never had one in a car. Fortunately the spare was serviceable and hadn't long been put back on the car. Seat belt wasn't long enough to secure it.

I was more gutted at having to use the pristine and still sealed bag for the punctured wheel, fortunately being an anorak I have two more :D

B***er! As an aside, where on earth did you manage to find a serviceable spare wheel & tyre? I've looked a few times but they appear to be as rare as a Liverpool Premier league trophy

Just lucky I guess Andy. When I've inflated the spares from zeds that have had euthanasia they start making scary cracking rupturing noises and end up looking like 50 pence pieces =))

Just use a spray can of tyre gunge and bin the spare, its a myth that you can not repair the tyre after you have used the stuff.
I always carry 2 of the large cans of tyre foam in the boot Mike. It's just completeness.

I have only ever had to use it once, forgot all about it and drove around for about six months with the stuff in the tyre.
Yep, good stuff. Did the same in a Punto I had a few years ago. Though it's reputed to be a different story on the tyre wall, more difficult to plug apparently?

Hot soapy water cleans it out easily. Got a can and a compressor in both our cars as both left the factory on "run flats"

Tony.

Probably the way to go, I just recall a colleague years ago with a brand new Rover, no spare just can of gunk, he had a puncture and the gunk didn't seal it, he got a secondhand wheel unit and put it in the boot the wheel recess still being there. Guess if some scrote slashes your tyre then you're stuffed.

How did you like driving with the biscuit on the rear? I had to turn the ASC off, was a bit a squirrely to say the least when I had to use the spare.

I believe an E46 spare wheel is the same as the Zed. @Brian4 found a current size new tyre nearest to the Zed spare.

@Andy McDonnell as posted above.. the 3 series car of the same era had the same space saver but it sits in a recess inside the boot so they don't rust and you can pick them up on eBay really cheap. That's what I did and then I smeared the inner and outer surfaces of the rim with Waxoyl then wrapped it in a black bin liner so hopefully this one wont rust.

@Andy McDonnell As Low rider says my wheel wasn't too bad and cleaned up ok but the tyre had started to crack and was well out of 5 year recommended life so I replaced the tyre. The prob with E46 spare wheels is they are now well past daes so wouldn't risk except for a couple of miles at a crawl . They are supposed to be 60 psi so any weakness will soon be found hence why I replaced the tyre with the next compatible size.

Thanks @Brian4 I'll take a look. Both the wheel and tyre are as rotten as a pear.

I didn't have a BMW bag with me when I had a rear tyre come off the rim. I now have one, but haven't had need for one since. Beginning to think that it's now some kind of lucky talisman :D

I think the main problem is not so much rust on the rim but the structural state of the tyre carcass. I've inflated 2 or 3 and the cords presumably break giving that scary noise followed by the tyre ballooning in all directions, you don't want to hang around inspecting it ! Excellent suggestion from Brian, although as he says even E46 units are probably well on their way too. Remember to source the correct unit if running 17 inch wheels, will be a little lop sided running a 15 o 16 inch unit. Inflated mine to 60psi with no apparent issues. As HT suggests a can of sealant prob easiest and safest way to go.
