As you know we are keen for Zroadster.org to be dynamic and reactive to its members‘ comments. Since so many of you seem very keen on photography and one or two questions have been already asked about “what camera?” etc the Mods and Admin Team thought it would be useful to have a dedicated area of the site for such discussions.

It’s not intended to replace “The Gallery” where your favourite Zed pics will reside, but it’s a general area (similar to “Computer Problems”) where you can discuss any and all things photographic.
    • If you have a favourite photo, why not let the rest of us see it?
How about a brief write up or review of your camera or lens?
Tell us your good (and bad) experiences of equipment.
What about video work, car mounts, the best way to get stable shots etc?

I'll get things rolling by asking for you recommendations on budget DSLRs
What models do you have that costs less than £200 or less than £500?

Looking forward to lots of answers in my quest for my first DSLR !

    Swamps,

This is a new forum for all aspects of photography.

You can post whatever pictures you have here, but ask that any that are Zed specific go in the main 'Z Gallery' section. We know you are a creative bunch, so we wanted to give you space to show it off.

    Gary

Thanks Pete - thats the sort of comments I was after.
We have used a Canon Ixus 75 (and a 40 before that) for 5 years but I am looking for something which will give me a bit more control than the simple point and press of the compacts.
Ideally it will also be small enough that SWMBO doesn't notice it in her handbag :D

I was a very keen amateur photographer until about 8 years ago but picked it up again following the birth of my daughter.

I progressed to a canon 1ds with various L lenses (pro camera of choice) as I have a couple of good friends who are pros with their own studios but traded down to a 20d as my interest lapsed (2nd hand pro kit is worth almost new money especially lenses)

The 20d served me well for 8 years but last year I decided to invest in new kit to keep track of my daughter over the next few years.

So now I'm running a canon 7d with a 17-55 f2.8 lens and 580exII flash (an L quality lens without the price tag).

I also run a Fiji X100 street camera which has a fixed fast lens. A quirky camera but awesome shots and great for when you can't be bothered lugging an SLR around.

I've slowly got my interest in photography back :)

Interesting you had a 20D John as I have just got myself one of these with a basic 18-55mm lens. Seems a great camera given the age (8 yrs old) but it is like new and picked the lens up brand new for £45 so I have got myself a half decent DSLR for peanuts really. Only been playing with it for a few days now and just learning all the manual modes as there is no point in using the auto modes is there. ;)

Just need to get out and take some good scenery shots when the weather picks up. Want to get a fixed 50mm lens too for portrait stuff and taking good shots of the zed.

    It's a cool camera.

Even the basic canon lenses take great pics. The expensive fast lenses give you more flexibility to be creative with depth of field in wider conditions but car pics in nice weather are great for learning on.

I have a 580EX speed light on eBay tonight which I expect to get >£150 for. If your interested let me know and you can have it for £125 posted. Do some research on it. It was the top of the range model which I've just paid over £300 to replace with the later model. Basically the same just recharges slightly quicker which I needed to keep up with an infant ! I would not offer if it wasn't such a great piece of kit I'd rather go to someone I know. Slight mark on one edge otherwise mint.

I've also got the EF-S 17-85 IS USM lens for sale which is mint on 99p auction ;-) the image stabilisation is well worth it. I upgraded to the faster lens so I can get away without flash indoors more. But you have a decent lens there and a 50mm prime lens would be great to learn with. Primes stop you being lazy and are great for statics such as cars. They tend to be faster than zooms £for£ as well and better quality lenses.

Thanks for the offer John but I will have to wait until later in the year before I get some more kit so I will just play with what I have got for the time being, good luck with the sales though.
