So here is a video of a Lynx landing in difficult conditions. Don't watch if you get sea sick...
Scary stuff that.
But the pilot has did have harpoon deck lock and negative pitch so the panic stops once on the deck as he locked to it.
We used to operate Seakings from the frigates and there was many a hart stopping moment in the North Atlantic, dived behind the bulkhead a few times, they would have to almost fly the helicopter on the deck even when it had been lashed down, once a wave almost washed me into the nets, it was that bad.
In the 2 years I was on the Frigates the Pilot only missed the deck once, landed with the tail wheel off the back of the ship.
The Westland EH101 Merlin has a deck lock system to grab on the deck as they touch down.

Fair shout @GazHyde. No real scary ditties to report on like @Kit worked with 18 Sqd Chinooks and 230 Sqd Puma at Gutersloh for 4 years. Interesting to see them both and harrier (s) in the same airspace (ish) all hovering at the same time. Chinooks, Seaking and Sickorskys (excuse spelling) down the Falklands, they really earn their crust down there! In the summer (our winter) the resident Seaking would take you out to sea and drop you off in your buoyancy aid and on your jack Jones, fly off and then come looking for you! People actually volunteered for this! Mad as a box of frogs! Much safer in the bar!

Thats what I liked about British Navy ships is the bar came with you:drinks:.
Crawled out from the bar few times just had to avoid the Mater-at-Arms unless you had been having a few with him.

Went on board HMS Dumbarton Castle a few times for a few scoops. No looking for the "Golden Rivet" but I was that leathered I had problems ducking and stepping through the doors (or what ever they're called) when going to the Heads! I swear the ship had raised two feet up on its plymsol line by the time we had finished. Great times. :depressed:o_O
