Water pump shopping list

Hello out there.

I have a 2.2 z3 with 83 000 miles on the clock. I have been reading about water pump failures, and having looked at the service record of the car can find no evidence of this ever having been replaced. I have no experience of car maintenance, so would like to know what other aspects of the cooling system should be changed at the same time. If anyone could provide me with a detailed shopping list of parts, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Daniel

I would change the expansion tank it's 20 year old plastic, cheap enough and super easy to change, also change the belt and tensioners if you are feeling generous and haven't been changed before. the radiator it's up to you it's got plastic parts too but I haven't had one fail yet touch wood the hoses are cheap enough too and super easy to change, it's all down to your budget really. The thermostat is also something you could change while you are at it if it's not been changed before

Hello Daniel,
As Mario stated, it really depends on your budget, from memory the 2.2 only has one sprung loaded tensioner, your engine code is M54, I also have a 2.2i

Some recommendations
Water pump MEYLE
Belts. MEYLE, Gates or Conti
Tensioners. INA (OE)
Thermostat. various suppliers
Hoses. Gates
Exp Tank. Various suppliers
Viscous coupling. MEYLE Behr Febi

the above are only a recommendation, most if not all found on eBay, they may not be the cheapest items but they are certainly the best quality for each item, hope this helps.
*Also check your radiator fan blade for cracks or pieces missing,

Hi Daniel, if you're changing the tensioners then I would replace the idler pulley(s) as well, most likely the originals and done the same amount of work. While the belts are off spin the Alternator by hand to check for bearing noise too. I have an A/C pump drive belt (new) in the garage which you're welcome to if you want it? It's a Gates belt and I can get the part number tomorrow.

Tony.

Re: thermostat (not covered in Dakar's spot-on recommendations above), there are two OEMs, Wahler and Behr.

The Wahler one has a known fault where coolant can leak out of the electrical sensor connection. I fitted a Wahler and had to replace it after a year because of this exact issue. Fitted the Behr unit instead and no issues since. Get the Behr if doing the stat.

Hello, Tony

Thanks for the information. I’ll add the idler pulleys to my list of parts. Also, thanks for the offer of the belt. Would it be the correct part, and how much would it be?

Regards

Daniel

Thanks for the advice. I will get the Behr unit, in that case.

Viscouse fan coupling
Thermostat
Water Pump
Belt adjustor idealer
Bought from Opie Oils {Z3 discount) came to £181 delivered.
Not knowing if the water had ever been changed ---
The coolant I got from BMW dealer not dear but can not recall cost

Hi Daniel, what year is your car? A 2.2 ? This belt is a Dayco (not Gates as I said) it is 5PK907. So it is 5 rib and 907mm long. If it will fit your car you are welcome to it. Postage will likely be £1.00 - £1.50. Does the belt drive the A/C and power steering?

Hello, Tony
It’s a 2002, 2.2. However, the question about whether it runs the A/C and power steering is well beyond my non existent mechanical knowledge. My plan is to get the parts people have recommended and then convince my local garage to fit them.

As a new Z owner about to embark on the same work ( adding that I have ZERO experience of car engine bay work, but pretty handy at DIY in general ), how long do you expect it will take to change all these components discussed above plus fan? cheers

Waterpump
Belt
Pulleys
Tensioners
Thermostat
Potentially cooling fan

If you're handy with mechanics tools a morning should see it done. Only slightly difficult thing is likely to be getting the fan coupling loosened on the water pump. You'll need a 32mm. spanner and a lump hammer (unless you have the "proper" tools to lock the pump pulley).

Using the correct tool makes the job easy and reduces the possibility of damaging the radiator, please also remember the viscous coupling has a “reverse thread” when loosening.

Using the correct tools is of course the better option. However, in the real world you are likely to have to resort to real world methods. :)
