Water pump failing?

My z3 coupe 2.8 has 65k on it. I bought it from an older lady and it was never driven hard. It squeals on cold start. A lot like how a bad water pump would sound. I turned the wheel and played with a couple of switches in the car to see if the sound changes thinking it might be the power steering or alternator but nothing. I noticed the tone changes a little when I shift from park to drive. I don’t know what that means but do you think it is the water pump or is the mileage a little low for that

The only way to really find out would be to remove the auxiliary drive belts and check the bearings in the alternator, idler pulleys and tensioner. My Z3 2.0 Auto developed a similar issue and as it got worse I would've sworn it was the auto box making the noise. It turned out to be the aux. Belt tensioner pulley bearing.

Hi
I had to replace the water pump on my 2.2 at the end of the summer, it started making a light rumbling noise from the front of the engine at tickover speed, initially it was only obvious if you were standing at the front of the car and only when the engine was hot, there was no leaks etc that I would normally associate with a failing pump on an older car. it gradually got worse and more obvious where the noise was coming from till I had to get it replaced. The car had done about 64000 miles.

Hello,

I would be more inclined to check and replace the drive belt it’s also the cheapest option, use a Gates, Continental or MEYLE drive belt these are made from epdm rubber , next I would look at an idler or tensioner pulley, I suspect the belt may have stretched or at least started to deteriorate, hope that helps.
